Hotel overview

Tweedsmuir Park Lodge sits on 60 acres of private land on the edge of Tweedsmuir Provincial Park, deep within the Bella Coola Valley and the southern reaches of the Great Bear Rainforest. Surrounded by forest, mountains and the Atnarko River, it’s a peaceful and remote setting, with wildlife often spotted right from the lodge grounds.

Accommodation is spread across a collection of timber-frame chalets, suites and bungalows, all set around a central lawn and designed to offer space, privacy and views of the surrounding landscape. The chalets provide a cosy, lodge-style feel with private decks and mountain views, while the main lodge is where guests come together for meals, drinks and to share stories from the day.

Stays here are typically based on a minimum of three nights, with four and five night itineraries allowing for a more in-depth experience. Each day combines guided activities with time to relax at the lodge, with a mix of small group or fully private options available depending on how you’d like to travel.

The experience here shifts slightly through the season. From mid to late August, the ‘Fresh Tracks’ period sees the transition into autumn, with bears beginning to move towards the rivers as the salmon runs start. September is considered the peak season for bear viewing, with consistent sightings along the Atnarko River as salmon numbers build. Into early October, the focus remains on wildlife, but with the added atmosphere of autumn colours, misty mornings and quieter conditions, making it a particularly rewarding time for photography and a more reflective experience.

The focus is very much on immersive wildlife and outdoor experiences. Guided river drifts, wildlife viewing platforms and interpretive walks all offer different ways to observe bears and learn about their behaviour. Earlier in the season, the emphasis shifts slightly towards broader exploration, with activities such as hiking, rainforest walks and valley tours, all led by experienced guides who adapt each day based on conditions and wildlife movement.

Alongside the bear viewing, the experience is well-rounded, with a range of included activities such as guided walks, river floats and, in August, options like via ferrata and valley hikes, with additional experiences such as heli-hiking available if you’d like to elevate your stay.

Everything is taken care of during your stay, with full board dining, drinks and guided excursions included, as well as transfers from Bella Coola if required. The atmosphere is relaxed and sociable, but with plenty of space to enjoy the surroundings at your own pace.
