The Kermode Bear, often known as the ‘spirit bear’, is a rare white variant of the North American black bear and one of the most iconic animals of the Great Bear Rainforest. Found only in this remote corner of north-western British Columbia, sightings are never guaranteed, but a stay at Spirit Bear Lodge offers one of the very best chances to see one in the wild.
Located in the small First Nations community of Klemtu, deep within the Great Bear Rainforest, the lodge sits on the edge of the Great Bear Sea, surrounded by forest, fjords and an extraordinary abundance of wildlife. Access is part of the experience, with a scenic flight from Vancouver to Bella Bella followed by a boat journey along a rugged, wildlife-rich coastline, where whales are often spotted en route.
Stays here are typically offered as four or six night all-inclusive packages, with everything centred around guided wildlife viewing and time out on the water. Days tend to follow a relaxed rhythm, heading out by boat each morning to explore nearby estuaries, inlets and river systems where bears gather, before returning to the lodge in the late afternoon. In spring, the focus is more on grizzly bears and coastal wildlife, while late summer and autumn bring the best chances of spotting the elusive spirit bear as salmon runs draw wildlife to the shoreline.
Alongside the wildlife viewing, there’s a strong cultural element woven throughout the stay. Guests spend time learning about the Kitasoo Xai’xais First Nations community, with experiences such as visits to the traditional Big House and informal evening talks, giving a deeper understanding of the land, its wildlife and the people who have lived here for generations.
The lodge itself is small and welcoming, with just 12 rooms, all offering views over the water. Rooms are simple but comfortable, with either king or twin beds and private bathrooms, while the main lodge provides a relaxed space for meals, evening presentations and time to unwind after a day exploring.
With internal flights, transfers, guiding, meals and excursions all included, it’s a seamless and immersive way to experience one of the wildest parts of Canada, with very little to think about beyond what you might see that day.
Key Facilities: Price: from £4,999 per person for a four night package.
