Okanagan Valley - Ideas for Free Time

Two of the main reasons for visiting this area are the scenery and the vineyards, and it’s very easy to get amongst both. There are many walking options in the region, from gentle lakeside trails to more challenging mountain hikes – often worth the effort for the stunning views over the lakes. The visitor information centres in the various towns are able to provide ideas to suit your ability. For wine there are simply hundreds to choose from and if you want to just pop in to one or two vineyards for a quick taster then we recommend asking your host or concierge which would be best suited to your tastes, or again visit the local tourist information office for a full run down of the local tipples. Simply driving around the area can be a delight as well. Many of the highways are lined with photo inspiring orchards and grapevines and throughout summer they are also dotted with roadside stands selling seasonal fruit from the nearby farms (most notably between Osoyoos and Oliver in the south of the region). Each of the Okanagan towns has its own characteristics, from livelier Kelowna and Penticton to wonderfully laid-back Peachland and Naramata, however, they all have common characteristics in the pretty lakefronts and excellent selection of locally sourced food and wine. Close to Kelowna Myra Canyon Park is home to a particularly scenic portion of the disused Kettle Valley Railway, now a walking & cycling trail which passes over 18 impressive trestle bridges and through two tunnels. To cycle the whole trail takes around four hours and bikes can be rented locally; alternatively it is possible to walk a shorter section. In Oosoyos the award-winning Nk'Mip Desert Cultural Centre is well worth a visit. Operated by the Oosoyos Indian band it is a great place to learn about this desert region of Canada and the peoples that live within in. There are a number of state-of-the-art exhibits and interactive displays, both inside and out, along with walking trails that showcase the flora and fauna and aim to raise awareness of conservation in the area.

Okanagan Wine Tour

Kelowna sits right in the heart of the Okanagan Valley, one of Canada’s most exciting wine regions, and a guided wine tour is a brilliant way to experience it without worrying about driving, routes, or logistics. You’ll spend the day hopping between a handful of wineries with tastings included, taking in vineyard views, learning a little about what makes the region special, and enjoying that laid-back Okanagan pace in between stops. It’s sociable, relaxed, and ideal if you want a “treat day” woven into your trip. If you’re keen to see a different side of the valley, the Naramata Bench is a real standout. The road along the bench winds above Okanagan Lake and is dotted with small, artisan producers, plus the odd distillery and cider maker, all wrapped up in a slower, community-focused feel. It’s a full-day experience with generous scenery between tastings, and there’s time built in for a vineyard lunch stop (meal paid locally), which makes the day feel nicely unhurried. For something close to town that still feels properly “vineyard-y”, South East Kelowna is a great choice. Within a short drive you’re among orchards and vines, with sweeping lake-and-mountain backdrops, and a varied mix of winery styles. Expect a good spread of tastings across four stops, from approachable favourites to more distinctive producers, with plenty of time to take it all in without the day feeling rushed. If you’d rather keep the day shorter, the East Kelowna Bench option is ideal. It’s an easy, afternoon-paced tour that still gives you a proper flavour of the region, visiting a selection of wineries that showcase Kelowna’s variety. It’s a lovely fit if you want tastings and views, then still have the rest of the day free for lakeside time, dinner plans, or a wander around town.

Kelowna E-bike Adventures

Kelowna is made for cycling, and an e-bike is such a brilliant way to explore more of the Okanagan without it ever feeling like hard work. With the extra boost when you want it, you can cruise the lakeside paths, head out towards vineyard country, or tackle the area’s hillier routes while still keeping the day relaxed and fun. One of the nicest touches here is the optional app with curated routes. It takes the faff out of planning and helps you pick a ride that matches your mood, whether that’s an easy waterfront loop with coffee stops, a scenic spin past orchards and wineries, or something a bit more adventurous. You can go at your own pace, stop whenever you like for photos, and generally just enjoy the freedom of having your own wheels for a few hours. If you’d like something more “iconic Okanagan”, the Myra Canyon trestles experience is a real highlight. You’ll head up to Myra-Bellevue Provincial Park and ride a beautifully flat, accessible trail along the old Kettle Valley Railway line, crossing a string of wooden trestle bridges and passing through historic tunnels with big views out over the valley. It’s the sort of route that feels special even if you’re not a keen cyclist, and the e-bike makes it easy for most fitness levels. For a classic Kelowna day out, the e-bike wine experience is another lovely option. It’s a relaxed way to combine gentle cycling with tastings at a handful of wineries, plus lunch, so it feels more like a day of exploring and grazing than a “tour” in the traditional sense.
