Marine Wildlife Journey in the Discovery Passage

Spend a few hours exploring the Discovery Passage and looking for the impressive wildlife which can often be spotted here – dolphins, black bears, porpoises, eagles, seals, sea lions and sometimes even orca and humpback whales. Your expert guide knows the area and its wildlife in depth and so along the way you will be given information about the marine ecology as well as an insight in to the cultural history of the First Nations peoples of the area. This is also a great opportunity to soak up the fabulous coastal scenery and even if you don’t see the full complement of wildlife, you will not be disappointed. The whole tour takes around four hours.

Quadra Island – Ideas for Free Time

Situated in the heart of the Discovery Islands, Quadra Island is a fantastic destination, offering stunning natural beaches, beautiful parks, and abundant wildlife. Just a short 10-minute ferry ride from Campbell River, the island is perfect for hiking enthusiasts, with plenty of trails to explore. If you’re more into the arts, you’ll love the thriving local arts community, where studios and galleries showcase incredible work to keep you inspired. For those visiting on a Saturday, the farmers’ market is a must, offering fresh local produce and a chance to experience the island’s charm. History and culture buffs will enjoy searching for the island’s ancient petroglyphs, which can be found scattered across the area—some easier to locate than others, making it a fun challenge to find them all. Don’t miss the Cape Mudge Lighthouse, another popular spot that’s well worth a visit. Whether you’re after outdoor adventures, artistic inspiration, or a peaceful escape, Quadra Island has something for everyone.

Grizzly Bear Viewing

The inlets and river valleys of the west coast of British Columbia are the ideal feeding grounds for grizzly bears and this full day trip takes you by boat to look for them. You journey first weave your way through the narrow passages between the Discovery Islands, eventually reaching Bute Inlet and the Orford River Valley (about a 1 hr, 50 min journey). The land in this area is owned and managed by the local Homalco First Nation Band and your group lands at their dock before being transported to an orientation centre. Here the Homalco guides will explain the rules of grizzly bear viewing - both in terms of respecting these magnificent animals and for the safety of everyone viewing. You proceed to a series of raised, covered platforms which overlook the river and from here you can safely observe the grizzlies trying to capture the leaping salmon. During this eight hour tour you spend around three hours watching the bears and it is a fantastic opportunity to see them in their natural habitat. Lunch is included.
