White Pass and Yukon Route Day Trip

White Pass is one of the most historically significant routes in the Yukon, and a marvel of engineering - the railway was built through a challenging landscape and in extremely challenging weather conditions. Nowadays it is considered to be one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world - cutting through coastal mountains and with breathtaking views in every direction. This full day trip starts with a coach journey down the historic Klondike Highway to Fraser in British Colombia, whereupon you board the White Pass and Yukon narrow gauge railway. The train journeys over magnificent White Pass Summit, at 800 metres, before descending down to Skagway, on the Alaskan panhandle. You will have time in Skagway to further explore the gold rush history before returning to Whitehorse by coach, with further views and informative commentary throughout. Please note that as you cross the border in to the US on this trip you will be asked to provide passport information to the tour provider.

Haines Junction – Ideas for Free Time

Start your visit with a trip to the Da Ku Cultural Centre, which also houses the Kluane National Park and Reserve Visitor Centre. The cultural centre celebrates the culture and traditions of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations people through guided tours, talks, artwork, and artefacts. The visitor centre features world-class exhibits about Kluane’s stunning landscapes, as well as the unique flora and fauna that thrive within it. Together, these centres provide a fascinating insight into the cultural and natural heritage of this part of the Yukon and are a must-do during your time here. If you wish to venture into the park, you’ll be rewarded with endless walking trails through awe-inspiring scenery. Maps are available at the visitor centre, offering routes that range from short strolls to more challenging hikes. Permits for hiking are also available here, making it easy to plan your adventure.

Dawson City – Ideas for Free Time

Whilst in Dawson, it’s hard not to imagine how the prospectors felt arriving here, driven by dreams of fortune. You can learn more about their lives through the many historic sites around the city. Explore the typical gold rush cabin of famous poet Robert W. Service, visit the Commissioner’s Residence built in 1901, or step aboard the SS Keno paddle steamer, which once served as the main mode of transportation for people and supplies in and out of the province. For a glimpse into Dawson’s transformation from a tent-town to the territorial capital, stop by Harrington’s Store, where historic photographs tell the story. Additionally, the Dawson City Museum delves into the gold rush era through a range of fascinating exhibits. A great place to begin your visit is the Dawson City Visitor Centre, where knowledgeable staff can help you plan your time and provide details on daily guided walks. For evening entertainment, don’t miss Diamond Tooth Gerties Gambling Hall, a Yukon legend. This recreated gold rush saloon features nightly, tongue-in-cheek can-can shows that become more risqué as the evening goes on, alongside table games and slot machines. While we don’t usually condone gambling, a small flutter here can make you feel like you’re living the chance-and-luck life of a Klondike gold prospector. Dawson is also one of the lucky spots to experience the Northern Lights in winter. Sometimes, they even appear as early as late August or September, so if you’re visiting at the end of the season, keep an eye on the night sky.

Canoeing on the Yukon River

The sparkling Yukon River is ideal for canoeing and kayaking, with calm waters and beautiful scenery. On this guided tour you paddle a traditional Canadian canoe or more modern kayak from Whitehorse as far at the confluence of the Takhini River, gently passing forested banks and open stretches where you can look for wildlife and birds - bald eagles are often spotted here. You knowledgeable guide will chat about the landscape as you go and ensure you get the most of your time on the water. The tour takes around four to four hours; a light snack and drink is included.
