Canoeing on the Yukon River

The sparkling Yukon River is ideal for canoeing and kayaking, with calm waters and beautiful scenery. On this guided tour you paddle a traditional Canadian canoe or more modern kayak from Whitehorse as far at the confluence of the Takhini River, gently passing forested banks and open stretches where you can look for wildlife and birds - bald eagles are often spotted here. You knowledgeable guide will chat about the landscape as you go and ensure you get the most of your time on the water. The tour takes around four to four hours; a light snack and drink is included. White Pass and Yukon Route Day Trip

White Pass is one of the most historically significant routes in the Yukon, and a marvel of engineering - the railway was built through a challenging landscape and in extremely challenging weather conditions. Nowadays it is considered to be one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world - cutting through coastal mountains and with breathtaking views in every direction. This full day trip starts with a coach journey down the historic Klondike Highway to Fraser in British Colombia, whereupon you board the White Pass and Yukon narrow gauge railway. The train journeys over magnificent White Pass Summit, at 800 metres, before descending down to Skagway, on the Alaskan panhandle. You will have time in Skagway to further explore the gold rush history before returning to Whitehorse by coach, with further views and informative commentary throughout. Please note that as you cross the border in to the US on this trip you will be asked to provide passport information to the tour provider.

Whitehorse – Ideas for Free Time

Whitehorse is a fantastic starting point for exploring the history of the Yukon. The MacBride Museum is packed with artefacts and exhibits about the natural history of the territory, First Nations culture, the development of Whitehorse, and the lives of the settlers. For paddleboat enthusiasts, the SS Klondike—one of the largest and last operating sternwheelers on the Yukon—is moored on the waterfront. Brochures outlining a self-guided tour of the vessel are available for a small fee. For a dose of Yukon creativity, Arts Underground is the oldest visual arts organisation in the territory, showcasing a rotating selection of exhibitions featuring local arts, crafts, and photography. Northend Gallery is another excellent spot to view Yukon and First Nations artwork and sculptures, as well as handcrafted jewellery and gifts, much of which is inspired by the region’s vast landscape. There are plenty of walking trails in and around Whitehorse, including the five-kilometre paved Millennium Trail, which connects the Yukon River Path to Miles Canyon. At Miles Canyon, whether you arrive by foot or car, you’ll be greeted by 50-foot-high basalt rock walls framing the turquoise Yukon River. This tranquil area also offers additional walking and cycling trails through the surrounding forest. For those wanting to get out on the water, several outfitters in Whitehorse provide canoe and kayak rentals.
