Wells Gray - ideas for free time

Wells Gray is famous for its waterfalls — with 39 named and hundreds more unnamed — created by the racing rivers and creeks that weave through the park. There are several impressive falls that can be easily accessed by a short walk from the Clearwater Valley Road. They are located at rather convenient intervals along the road, so a day here can almost be planned around them. Dawson Falls are small horseshoe-shaped falls, close to the road, while Spahats Falls is a dramatic 80-metre drop through a keyhole in the rock face — there are also spectacular views down the canyon in the direction of the river flow. Bailey’s Shute is a shallow but powerful torrent of water, passing over the rocks at up to 1,000 cubic metres per second, while perhaps the most famous and impressive of all, Helmcken Falls, cascades 141 metres into the canyon below. While journeying along the valley road, take time to stop at the Green Mountain Viewpoint, where you can enjoy spectacular panoramic views out over the park, and from where you gain a real sense of the immense wilderness surrounding you. Information about walking trails can be found at the information centre in Clearwater; however, we really recommend taking a guided walk here. The local guides can offer a fascinating insight into the ecology and geology of the park and help you spot wildlife such as bears, deer, and eagles.

Wildlife and Heritage Interpretive Walk

Wells Gray Provincial Park is home to over 5,000 square kilometres of protected wilderness brimming with high forest, deep valleys, alpine meadows and meandering creeks. Take a guided walk with a passionate and knowledgeable guide to really discover the rich natural, human and geological history of the area, enjoy personalised interpretation of the environment and learn about the wildlife that lives within it. There are various options for duration of walk and exertion required, making it a suitable experience for all ages and abilities, and each walk is tailored to the interests of the group so you really get the most out of your time here. Thompson River Float Trip

This is a scenic trip designed for those who wish to experience the magnificent scenery of the area, but don’t want the adrenaline thrills of white-water rafting. During this three-hour adventure you gently float along the Thompson River in an inflatable raft, appreciating the scenery at a slower pace and keeping an eye out for wildlife both in the water and at the river’s edge – salmon, eagles and bears are often seen. You guide will also share folklore and history of the area, from the native culture to the gold rush explorers, giving a lovely rounded background to Wells Gray.

Scenic River Safari

Blue River is a small settlement on the Southern Yellowhead Highway (Highway 5) about an hour east of Wells Gray Provincial Park. If you are journeying between Jasper and Wells Gray or vice versa why not break up your journey here with a one-and-a-half hour scenic river safari. Specially-designed boats travel along the turquoise waters whilst your guide gives information-packed commentary about the surrounding natural environment and points out any wildlife you may encounter along the way. There is also a small floating restaurant onsite so you can enjoy a bite to eat before continuing your journey.
