Jetwing Jaffna offers decently comfortable accommodation in the form of 55 deluxe bedrooms. Elegantly furnished in a culturally contemporary style, the rooms are large and airy, with great views across the town. A big selling point is the hotel's rooftop bar where we recommend you head to for a sun-downer cocktail to watch the sunset over the lagoon. Jaffna does not have a lot of accommodation options with it being a lesser-visited spot, but we think this is the best one and it is in fact Jaffna's first luxury hotel!

Tour of Jaffna

Jaffna is closer to southern India than Colombo, which has unsettled the area for centuries. Our half-day tour of Jaffna explores its turbulent and historic past that spans Sri Lanka’s colonial era and even further back.  As part of your tour you will explore Manthrimanai: the remains of the palace of King Sangilian who was the last King of Jaffna. You will visit Point Pedro, which is the most northerly point of Sri Lanka. You will visit Nelavarai Bottomless Well, a natural underground water well with many enthralling legends that your guide will explain. You will visit Keerimalai Springs, said to healing properties. Later you will proceed to Kandarodai, where excavations have unearthed over 50 small stupas constructed close together. Some historians believe that Kandarodai marks the spot where Buddha landed on his second visit to the island. The tour also takes you to Jaffna Fort, built by the Portuguese in 1618. The fort was badly damaged during the war; however work is now in progress to restore this historical site.  If time permits your guide will also take you to Jaffna library. Built in many stages from 1933, it became a repository of archival material written in palm leaf manuscripts as well as historical documents and newspapers that have been published over hundreds of years. The tour should take approximately 4-5 hours.

Jaffna Islands

A string of islands trail out across the sea west from Jaffna, which can easily be explored by simply driving across the Panay Bridge, which connects the island of Kayts to the Jaffna peninsula. Our half-day tour explores the quant beaches, lagoons and mysterious temples that are scattered across the islands. The tour includes a ferry ride across to the Hindu temple of Negapooshani Amman, built by the pre-historic Nagas. It also includes the Buddhist temple of Nagadeepa. This unique tour normally takes 4-5 hours. There is also a  day trip across to Delft Island, a place not a lot of tourists tend to visit. Life on Delft is simple - the earthen homes are surrounded by coral walls. Catch a glimpse of the famed “Growing Rock”, which is said to naturally grow and it resembles the appearance of a serpent. There is also a sprawling Baobab tree, which is believed to be introduced by the Arabic traders. The old Dutch Fort is a remarkable reminder of a thriving colonial era and the Queen’s Tower, which has functioned like a lighthouse centuries ago, is yet another monument belonging to the Dutch era. You will also encounter herds and herds of wild horses roaming freely.
