Hotel overview

The Oberoi Cecil dates back to 1884 and is to this day one of Shimla’s finest hotels. The property radiates charm and elegance with classic fabrics, wood panelling and opulent chandeliers. Rooms are spacious with large luxurious beds and Burmese teak floors; some overlook the gardens while others make the most of the snow peaked Himalayas. The restaurant serves both Asian and European food during breakfast, lunch and dinner but snacks can also be enjoyed in Cedar Garden, their beautiful outdoor dining area. There’s also the Tea Bar and Lounge as well. The property also boasts an indoor heated pool, a spa, and a billiards room. Staff are happy to recommend nature walks and routes through the glorious area.

Walking Tour of Shimla’s Ridge

Deep in the foothills of the Himalayas likes Shimla, one of India’s most famous hill stations that is strung out along a 12km ridge. Shimla was where much of Rudyard Kipling’s, Kim, took place. Your guided walking tour of Shimla starts from The Indian Institute of Advanced Studies. You will pass many other Raj era buildings such as the Shimla Club, The Oberoi Clarkes, Gaiety Theatre, The Mall, The Ridge, Gorton Castle (now office of The Accountant General), the State Museum of Himachal and finally ending the walk at the magnificent Indian Institute of Advanced Studies (otherwise known as the Viceregal Lodge). This is a fascinating tour and one that is best enjoyed on foot with an experienced guide. Your guide will introduce each building to you, giving an account of their individual history, designers, and notable occupants.

Shimla Toy Train Experience

Inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list, the Kalka to Shimla Railway is to many the highlight of the region. The construction of the 96km long, single-track line was completed in 1903 and is still in perfect working order.  The train travels at a maximum of 15mph through a multitude of tunnels and over numerous bridges. To enjoy the best views you will catch the train from Shimla to Kandaghat station (or vice versa depending on the flow of your itinerary) where your driver will meet you. It’s a slow but incredibly fascinating journey through the foothills of the Himalayas. Some prefer to do the full toy train ride journey between Kalka and Shimla, however we suggest a shorter journey (approximately two hours between Kandaghat and Shimla). Please note your local guide in Shimla will be able to show you the old steam train, rarely used these days but it is well looked after and fun to have a look on board.
