The Ibera wetlands lie in the province of Corrientes, only a day’s drive south of Iguazu Falls and Missiones. Here, below the belt of Atlantic rainforest you come to a wide open savannah like region of seasonally flooded marshland that is a haven to unique species of mammals and birds. Brazil’s Pantanal may be better known but the wildlife here is equally magnificent and access is considerably more straightforward, with either a drive south from Iguazu via the Jesuit Missions or a short flight from the capital to Posadas. As a treat, a scenic small aircraft transfer to your lodge is an amazing way to appreciate the vast beauty and expanse of the waters below from the air.

Marvel at the families of capybara that dot the shores of the marshes, the largest rodents in the world. Caiman laze in the sun close to the shallows and Marsh and Brocket deer poke their heads above the grasses as you approach. The vivid colours of kingfishers and the unique markings of the striking Jabiru storks are just a fraction of the incredibly diverse birdlife that inhabits the region. Rarer spottings include neotropical river otters, maned wolves and chinchilla at night, while howler monkeys inhabit small areas of forest. Stay in a small local style lodge or a traditional working ranch on the edge of the wetlands as you hike, ride, take 4WD tours and of course meander around the waters by canoe. The region is also well-known to fly-fishing enthusiasts as there is the chance to fish for the prized golden dorado.
