Pilgrimage Village is a collection of bungalows set on expansive grounds in the hills surrounding Hue city, close to the Nguyen dynasty tombs. It is important to note that it is well outside of the city. You cannot walk out of the resort to any restaurants or bars. Instead, expect birdsong and grass underfoot – this a base from which to explore the countryside and bikes are available for just this purpose. Pilgrimage Village offers an escape from the noise and traffic of Vietnam’s cities, perhaps better suited to those on a more leisurely itinerary. The hotel does operate a free shuttle downtown 6 times per day, covering the 3 miles in just 10 minutes.
There is plenty to commend Pilgrimage Village. They have created something a little bit special and out of the ordinary. There are 99 rooms, villas and suites, set in small bungalow clusters with plenty of space in the lush tropical gardens and green lawns. The rooms are very large, and incorporate balconies, cheery rustic furnishings, box TVs, cosy lampshades, silk bathrobes and a expansive bathrooms with tub. The style is rustic but mod. The lead-in category rooms are nicely done and afford excellent value for money but, for not much extra, higher category rooms are in large self-contained bungalows, some with private pools. The two communal pools are, without doubt, the best in and around Hue. The larger of the two allows for serious swimming and is surrounded by t sun loungers.
The resort is home to 2 restaurants and 3 bars. ‘Junrei Restaurant’ is one of central Vietnam’s largest traditional houses and has been crafted in an ancient style using authentic imperial columns. ‘The Valley’ serves a more familiar menu of Western favourites. In stark contrast, the hotel’s two bars are designed in a futuristic style with modern art and creative lighting. The hotel has a good spa offering a selection of treatments from around the world. Guests can enjoy complimentary yoga and tai chi among other activities.
For many, Pilgrimage Village is the best choice hotel in this area. Yes, it is a distance from the town centre but there is very little reason to go in to Hue in the evenings as both the hotel restaurants are excellent. This is a nice self-contained retreat and a comfortable staging post providing respite from the cities.
