Bushman’s Kloof is set in the beautiful Cederberg Mountains, and is a superb place to come and escape the 21st century. The open plains and watering holes are cut through with ridges of cracked and folded rock. Tucked into these ridge lines are galleries of San rock art, the fragile drawings of just a few lines somehow magically capturing the gait of the huge eland, or the grace of a hunter at the moment he lets his arrow fly. The antelope depicted in these paintings are very much still in evidence, along with herds of mountain zebra. Drives and walks through the reserve allow you to see both the animals and the art, as well as get to know more about the indigenous flora and fauna in the company of expert guides. There is a real focus on slowing things down at Bushman’s Kloof, and the wonderful spa and amazing cooking certainly help with this, as do the rooms, appointed in luxurious country style. Your time at Bushman’s is entirely self-contained – it’s too far from the real world to nip out for a meal or a drink!
