Skeena Rail Journey

The Skeena train winds its way over two days through some remarkable scenery between Prince Rupert on the west coast to Jasper in the Rocky Mountains, broken up by an overnight stop in Prince George. The section between Prince Rupert and Prince George passes along the beautiful Skeena River valley, up in to the rugged expanse of interior British Columbia. From Prince George the train makes its way in to the foothills of the Rockies, winding through the Yellowhead Pass on the border of British Columbia and Alberta, and on to Jasper. Whichever direction you choose to journey in expect diverse and beautiful landscapes studded with lakes, forest clad hills, braided river valleys and tiny settlements. Economy class offers comfortable seating in a regular carriage with large picture windows; light meals and snacks can be purchased at the on-board café/bar. Whilst this is the ‘budget’ option it is also the class in which many locals travel so this can often be a good way to get talking to some of the people who live in these more remote parts of the province. Touring class, which is only available on certain departures in the summer months, offers seating with extra-large panoramic windows, access to the Park dome car with its glass ceiling and a complimentary selection of hot and cold meals. Combined with the Inside Passage ferry the Skeena is a brilliant way to travel around this middle section of British Columbia without having the drive the enormous distances.

Nature Tour to Maligne Lake

This fantastic five hour tour takes you to the most scenic spots around Jasper. You first head to Maligne Canyon where you take a walk along the side of the deep gorge to view the impressive falls and Maligne River as it thunders below. From here you continue to the mysteriously disappearing Medicine Lake and then on to Maligne Lake when you join a one-and-a-half hour interpretive boat cruise. Afterwards you will have time to relax with a cuppa in the lakeside café before returning to Jasper. If you would prefer not to join the cruise you have the option to go for a guided walk along the shoreline instead.

Spirit Island Cruise on Maligne Lake

Maligne Lake is the largest glacially formed and fed lake in the Canadian Rockies, stretching between the mountains south-east of Jasper. As with Lake Louise further south, it is part of a spectacular vista, framed by snow-capped peaks and flanked by spruce and fir trees and this one-and-a-half hour interpretive cruise is a fantastic way to access the best views. The tour is accompanied by interesting commentary and mid-way through there is a photo stop at Spirit Island where you disembark for a short walk to the lookout point.

Rockies Sightseeing Tour - Jasper to Banff

The road from Jasper to the southern end of the Canadian Rockies is considered one of the most scenic drives in Canada. Skirting the eastern side of the Rocky Mountains there are spectacular vistas around every corner, as the majestic mountains loom and lakes glisten with ice-fed waters. If you are not self-driving this section then a guided coach transfer offers you the transportation along with interesting commentary to ensure you get the most out of this journey. You make your way south along the Icefields Parkway – stopping at a number of scenic spots to take photos and enjoy the fabulous views. At the spectacular Colombia Icefields you can enjoy a trip on to the ice in a specially adapted Ice Explorer vehicle and then have time to look around the Discovery Centre and take lunch. You will also have the opportunity to experience the Glacier Skywalk attraction – a glass-floored platform which stretches out over the Sunwepta Canyon – before continuing on to Lake Louise. Here you stop to view the striking turquoise waters before reaching your final destination. The totally journey time is around 9.5 hours.
