Diving

There is some wonderful diving to be had in Oman; the waters are warm, there is coral, and a huge variety of fish including, on occasion, behemoths like whale sharks. Wreck diving is another possibility (for the experienced) and trips out to stunning dive sites at the Daymaniyat Islands are available. Most of the beachside hotels have a dive centre where experienced divers can arrange dives and equipment hire, and beginners can take their first strokes into the underwater kingdom under the supervision of experts.

Muttrah to Riyam Park Hike

Just set back from the main road that snakes along Muscat's coastline at Muttrah, you'll find a hiking trail that takes you up into the hills behind the corniche, revealing beautiful views over the more scenic parts of the capital and over the water. The path is only two and a half kilometres long, so it would take just an hour or two to complete and is fairly accessible to hikers of all abilities. There are some steeper and rocky sections, so sturdy footwear is recommended, but you'll still find local families and people of all ages along the route. You can either start at Muttrah and finish in Riyam Park, or walk the other way around - either route is a pleasant way to link up two beautiful parts of the city. It's labelled as the C38 trail on Google Maps, so that should help you find the starting point, and the path is very straightforward to follow and complete independently without a guide.

The Batinah Plain

To the north of Muscat and lying between the coast and the Hajar Mountains, lies the Batinah Plain, a fertile area providing much of Oman’s food and agriculture. For those interested in the history and architecture of Oman, it is worth a visit, either as a day trip from Muscat, or perhaps on the way to Bani Awf, the off-road route through the mountains to Nizwa. Dotted along the base of the mountains are a series of springs and wadi mouths. These had great strategic importance historically, and magnificent forts, notably Rustaq and Nakhl, were built to defend them. These forts have been built on plugs of rock, incorporating the naturally impregnable slopes into the design of the walls. The walls and fabric of the forts has been restored to its exact original state, and the various bits of furniture and weaponry on display give an accurate idea of what life was like in these forts.

Dolphin Cruise

Dolphins are year-round residents of the Indian Ocean off Muscat. Board your sleek, modern motor-yacht at one of Muscat’s marinas, and let yourself be looked after by the attentive crew. Nosing out from amongst the rocky outcrops and shoals close to the shore, you’ll then set off to find dolphins and spend time enjoying their frolicking. An added bonus of a trip like this is the chance to admire the dramatic coastline from the ocean side, and to appreciate just how strung out along the coast the city is. This is a shared excursion, so you will be with other travellers on the boat, and the standalone dolphin cruise spends two hours out on the water. If you would like time in the sea for some swimming and snorkelling, we can also arrange the extended cruise which takes three hours and equipment for this activity is provided. This is a lovely way to spend a few hours relaxing off the coast of Muscat, and we find couples and families alike really enjoy this trip.

Kayaking from Muscat

The coastline that surrounds the Omani capital is dotted with inlets that make is perfect for kayaking. On this half-day excursion you'll venture 45 minutes east from the capital to Bandar al Khayran, the ideal spot to launch your kayak from and admire the golden rocks alongside some of the bluest water you will ever see! You'll be exploring for around three hours, and have a guide with you as you drift along, taking you to the mangroves and secluded beaches that are only accessible from the sea. You'll stop on these shores for snacks and some snorkelling, before hopping back into your kayak for the return paddle. This excursion is appropriate for travellers of any ability - the kayaks are wide and stable, designed for any level of kayaking experience, including absolute beginner. The excursion is shared, so you may be with a few other travellers, and runs on Mondays and Thursdays.
