Excursion Overview
Once a Wetland devoid of much water due to the mass pumping by thirsty Ammani's the Azraq Wetland Reserve is on the rise again, thanks to the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) who have worked tirelessly to restore and preserve this stunning wetland. Although for the moment just 10% of the original wetlands remain, it is once again flourishing with resident and migratory birds returning to use the wetlands during their winter migration from Europe to Africa. The best time to see birdlife is in winter (December to February) and early spring (March and April) with large flocks of raptors steadily arriving in May.
From the walkways and hides, visitors get the chance to observe birds close at hand, including local, migratory and occasional rare species. But you don't just have to be a bird enthusiast to warrant a journey to the Wetlands, water buffalo are also known to frequent the reserve and there are many different hiking and biking trails to explore from the easy circular 'Marsh trail' to the guided 22km Azraq Village Biking Trail.
