Staying in a traditional ryokan inn and sleeping on a futon isn’t everyone’s cup of tea – but it would be a shame to skip Takayama for that reason! The Chisun Grand is a comfortable and more conventional option, not too far from the train station and still only 10-minutes’ walk from Takayama Jinya and the charms of the Old Town.
Tastefully decorated rooms are decked out in neutral colours and have everything you would need for a few nights’ stay – including a coffee machine, kettle and mini-fridge. The lower priced rooms are a little cosy, but the deluxe options give plenty enough space for a hotel that you will spend minimal time in. Guests can benefit from the rejuvenating water in the onsite spa and sauna, great in the winter months or after a heavy day of exploring the region. Breakfast is a real treat – varied, plentiful and offering both Japanese and Western dishes. The same restaurant-cafe also serves dinner and acts as an evening bar, though there are plentiful better choices around Takayama – if you’re not too tired to head out instead.
