The Heritage was formally the old Madurai Coats Club, designed by renowned Sri Lankan architect, Geoffrey Bawa. Originally built out of locally quarried stone, restored abandoned pillars and antique gates, the property has now been sympathetically restored and extended into a beautiful 66-room hotel. It’s an oasis in the bustling city of Madurai and arguably its best hotel. Central to the property is a large glistening swimming pool; inspired by a temple tank its steps lead you down into the water. Rooms are spread throughout the grounds and are spoiling. The Deluxe Club rooms are set back away from the main reception area and are more traditional in style compared with the other rooms. The Luxury Villas are closer to the pool and are huge and contemporary; think polished wooden floors, indulgent bathrooms, and private pools. There’s one main restaurant, Banyan, as well as an additional bar and coffee shop.
