This half-day tour is designed for those just stopping in Agra between Delhi and Jaipur. It takes in the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort. The Taj Mahal was described by Rudyard Kipling as ‘the embodiment of all things pure’ and it is widely regarded as the most beautiful building in the world and a jewel of Muslim art in India. This magnificent mausoleum of white marble was built between 1631 and 1648 by Shah Jahan as a memorial to this third wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died giving birth to their third child.
The best times to view the Taj are early morning and late afternoon when the light is low. However, whenever you visit, do take the opportunity to find yourself a quiet corner to sit awhile. You only need to move a hundred metres from where everyone else walks and you could be a million miles away
You will continue on and visit Agra Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fort is huge, with 20-metre-high walls and a two-and-a-half-kilometre circumference.
