Hotel overview

The Tortuga Lodge & Gardens is one of the most elegant lodges in the Tortuguero National Park. Surrounded by 20 hectares of private gardens, the 27 rooms all have river views and are full of rustic charm with warm textiles, vintage photos and ceiling fans. There are plenty of trails around the grounds, as well as a riverside pool, bar and restaurant. The lodge is just across the river from the tiny airport, and the flight from San Jose is only around half an hour. Transfers and tours here will feel more exclusive than most other lodges in the area, for a more personal experience.

Tortuguero Village visit

A tour of this small, laid-back community is a typical activity of every visit to Tortuguero. Just one main dusty road slices through the length of the village, dotted by ramshackle houses and small kiosks. Exploring the village won’t take long, but in an area where the main focus is on nature, it can be a relaxing change of scenery to sip a cold drink and watch the world go by in this unique little dwelling where the jungle meets the sea.

Tortuguero Jungle Walk

Many lodges in Tortuguero are set in tropical forest with walking trails to explore. Your nature walk will typically take place within the lodge grounds where a specialist guide will take you on a short circuit in search of the curious amphibians, plants, insects and birds. Don’t forget to look up from time to time, so as not to miss the glimpse of a howler or spider monkey passing through the treetops.

Boat safari along the Tortuguero Canals

Early morning or late afternoon is the best chance to spot wildlife in Tortuguero, and you will set out with the rest of your group for a gentle boat trip along a section of canal. Your expert naturalist guide will scan the tree tops and water’s edge, pointing out glossy cormorants drying their feathers, sleeping bats camouflaged on tree trunks and perhaps the dart of a bright green lizard scuttling along a drooping branch.
