Hotel overview

One of the only quality lodges in Tortuguero with direct access to the coast, Mawamba is a unique place to stay. Guest accommodation is in simple, wooden cabins all with their own private bathroom and porch with hammock. All meals are served on a buffet basis in the lodge’s airy restaurant, and there is a large swimming pool for relaxation between excursions. During your stay you will be taken on a complimentary tour of the lodge’s expansive grounds which feature butterfly gardens and a frog garden.

Tortuguero Village visit

A tour of this small, laid-back community is a typical activity of every visit to Tortuguero. Just one main dusty road slices through the length of the village, dotted by ramshackle houses and small kiosks. Exploring the village won’t take long, but in an area where the main focus is on nature, it can be a relaxing change of scenery to sip a cold drink and watch the world go by in this unique little dwelling where the jungle meets the sea.

Boat safari along the Tortuguero Canals

Early morning or late afternoon is the best chance to spot wildlife in Tortuguero, and you will set out with the rest of your group for a gentle boat trip along a section of canal. Your expert naturalist guide will scan the tree tops and water’s edge, pointing out glossy cormorants drying their feathers, sleeping bats camouflaged on tree trunks and perhaps the dart of a bright green lizard scuttling along a drooping branch.

Tortuguero Jungle Walk

Many lodges in Tortuguero are set in tropical forest with walking trails to explore. Your nature walk will typically take place within the lodge grounds where a specialist guide will take you on a short circuit in search of the curious amphibians, plants, insects and birds. Don’t forget to look up from time to time, so as not to miss the glimpse of a howler or spider monkey passing through the treetops.
