Hotel overview

Whilst the brightly-painted buildings of the Fonda Vela at first look a little at odds with its natural surroundings, inside you will find spacious rooms and good facilities. The hotel is set in expansive grounds, though it is worth bearing mind that the town is a good 15 minute journey away by taxi. If remaining at the hotel you can relax in the Jacuzzi and covered swimming pool (Fonda Vela is one of the only hotels in Monteverde with a pool) and you also have the choice of dining at one of two on-site restaurants.

Cloud forest zip lining

You will be collected from your hotel today and transferred to the activity centre that offers the most exhilarating zip lining in Monteverde. Traverse an exciting two-mile circuit that offers a total of 15 individual cables, all of varying lengths and speeds but set in wonderful cloud forest scenery. If you are feeling particularly adventurous you can take the leap of faith with an optional Tarzan swing at the end of the circuit.

Monteverde Cloud Forest Nature Walk

Early morning is the best time to enjoy the nature of the Monteverde reserve. There are 13 kilometres of trails accessible to visitors in Monteverde itself, but your specialist guide will lead you through the prime areas for spotting wildlife and enjoying the best views of the cloud forest. The reserve boasts an astonishing 3000 species of plant including the highest diversity of orchids in the world, as well as 120 species of reptile and amphibian and over 400 species of bird. Look out for white-faced capuchin monkeys darting through the trees above you and listen out for the distinctive ‘chime’ of the Three-wattled Bellbird.

Monteverde horse riding

You will be collected from your hotel and driven to an 80-hectare private farm located just outside the quiet cloud forest village of Santa Elena. From here begin a gentle two-hour ride through lush forest, open fields, coffee and banana plantations. On a clear day you may also be able to get spectacular views of the Nicoya Gulf.

Curi Cancha Reserve nature walk

Currently attracting fewer crowds than the Monteverde nature reserves, Curi Cancha is a smaller reserve at slightly lower altitude with areas of primary and secondary cloud forest. The forest clearings here make it a particularly good place good for seeing birds, and you may even be able to get a glimpse of the beautiful resplendent quetzal. Other species to look out for include spider monkeys, the three-wattled bellbird, sloths, toucans and hummingbirds.

Cloud forest gondola ride & zip lining

A gentle ascent by cloud forest gondola begins your activity today, this leisurely ride accompanied by  a naturalist guide who will tell you about some of the flora and fauna that can be found in the area. You will then take to the tree tops, soaring through the canopy across a series of eight cables. Relatively little effort is required to enjoy this particular zip lining circuit, which is suitable for all ages.

Monteverde night walk

Depart your hotel early this evening and transfer to the Monteverde reserve for your tour to discover the wildlife of the cloud forest after dark. After an introductory video your expert guide will lead you along a forest trail for approximately one mile in search of creatures such as coatis, fireflies, tree frogs and poison dart frogs, bats, lizards, many different sleeping birds and occasionally even tarantulas (from a safe distance!) Total tour durations is approximately two hours.
