Cloud forest birdwatching

Depart the lodge early this morning for your best chance to view some of the countless species of birds that can be found in the reserves here (with close to 300 species recorded in the wider area). You will be led by a specialist guide through the forest trails in search of hummingbirds, woodpeckers, hawks, varying species of trogon and other cloud forest birds. Typical tour duration is around two hours.

San Ramon, coffee plantation tour & Sarchi handicrafts village

Your day will begin with a short tour of nearby San Ramon. Known as Costa Rica’s “city of poets”, San Ramon was the birthplace of three previous presidents, including Pepe Figueres who abolished Costa Rica’s military and established its current democracy. You will visit a photo gallery in his honour, as well as the nearby church and Central Park. Continue south along the Pan-American Highway to Naranjo district where you will take an enjoyable coffee tour in a beautiful estate set in 247 hectares of rolling coffee plantations. Your final stop will be the handicrafts village of Sarchí. This small community is the artisan centre of Costa Rica – it has undoubtedly become of a bit of a tourist trap in recent years, but it is a good place to pick up some souvenirs and see displays of the traditional ox-cart painting). (Please note this tour is only available from Villa Blanca – similar tours can be arranged from El Silencio, which can be discussed with concierge upon arrival).

Cloud forest nature walk

Your expert guide will lead you around some of the best cloud forest trails in the immediate vicinity of your lodge, explaining some of the traits of the unique ecosystems here. In addition to countless species of bird, this mist-shrouded forest houses a wealth of ferns, orchids and medicinal plants, as well as tree frogs, poison dart frogs, butterflies and howler monkeys.
