Extend Your Polar Bear Trip

As polar bear viewing takes place primarily in October and November there’s a temptation to simply fly in and fly straight home as, at this time of year, a lot of Canada is winding down for winter. However, it is possible to add a city stopover – Vancouver, Toronto or Montreal – and enjoy the sights and sounds without the summer crowds. The museums, galleries and indoor attractions are open all year round and even some outdoor activities and sightseeing excursions run to the end of October. Alternatively you could add a few days in the mountains before the snow falls. From Montreal the Laurentian Mountains are a short drive away and in October will normally still be holding on to the spectacular oranges and reds of the fall colours. Alternatively if you fly via Calgary you can head in to the Rockies. Banff is only an hour and a half away and at this time of year the snow is slowly creeping down the mountain-sides and the frost across the lakes, making for the beginnings of a magical winter wonderland. The weather can be a little unpredictable in both places but if you are well prepared you can still enjoy some lovely late autumn walks and then get to snuggle up in front of a fire at the end of the day.

Summer Wildlife Viewing from Churchill

As the sea ice retreats in July and August thousands of beluga whales gather to the south-western coast of Hudson Bay to feed, molt and give birth in the warmer waters of the river estuaries. This is the highest concentrations of belugas in the world and so this is one of the best places to view them. Additionally this can be a good time to spot a few polar bears as they return to the land to forage along the shoreline or amongst the tundra over the summer months. It is possible to spend several days in and around Churchill to look for these fascinating creatures as well as a range of other arctic wildlife such as seals, arctic hares, foxes, mink, martens and occasionally wolves and moose. There is of course a cacophony of birdlife as well, and this is a great time to get the binoculars out and look for interesting and unique estuarine and marine birdlife. This experience is part of a package which includes four nights in Churchill and a night either side in Winnipeg, giving you plenty of time to look for wildlife and experience the magnificent tundra in summer.

Winter Polar Bear Viewing from Churchill

Throughout October and November polar bears gather around the edges of Hudson Bay in anticipation of the sea ice freezing for winter. This is a great time to see them close to Churchill as they wait to head out across the ice. The best way to view the bears is from specially adapted tundra buggies which go out each day and take you in to the heart of polar bear territory. These vehicles move slowly and so do not disturb the bears, and indeed you will often find them coming up to the buggy to have a curious sniff around. The buggies have large panoramic windows which give you unparalleled viewing and photo opportunities, and also give you a fantastic sense of the absolute remoteness of the place – with snow-covered tundra as far as you can see.
