Theyyam is an ancient ritual form of worship found only in northern Kerala, specifically along the Malabar Coast. The performers of Theyyam belong to the lower castes of society and are dressed in elaborate colourful costumes, normally performing outside village temples. The music is produced by a number of drummers and trumpets, while the dancer moves around the arena illustrating Hindu myths through movement. It’s a dramatic and highly unique art form, that is often difficult to find. Generally the performances are restricted to the months between October and June, with January arguably being the best month to see them. Please note there is no guarantee of seeing a performance, as they are rare and difficult to find. Your hosts at Ayisha Manzil will do their best to track one down for you during your stay.
