Mahale is a scenically stunning place, a chain of dramatic forested peaks running alongside Lake Tanganyika, the second deepest and second largest lake in the world, with views of the Congo across the vast water. Kungwe Beach Lodge, as the name suggests, is located on a secluded beach with the mountain range behind and the gin clear waters of Lake Tanganyika in front. The main thatched building is designed in the shape of a dhow boat and houses a pleasant lounge and dining area. There is also a firepit which is the perfect place to enjoy sunset with your tipple of choice.
The primary activity in the park is the chimp trekking but there are also a host of other activities to enjoy including forest walks, kayaking, fishing and boat safaris. The ten spacious en-suite safari-style rooms all have a private balcony with spectacular views, flushing toilette, shower, 24-hour electricity and king-sized beds. For Mahale we tend to suggest the Nomad camp, Greystokes, but if lack of availability there dictates an alternative (it often does) then we are very happy to recommend Kungwe.
