Surrounded by an 8.8-kilometre seawall, Stanley Park is a sprawling green space on the edge of downtown Vancouver, bordered by the ocean and offering magnificent views of the Cypress and Grouse Mountains. Serving as both a recreational area for Vancouver residents and a top tourist attraction, the park has plenty to keep visitors entertained for an afternoon or even longer.
For starters, there are over 27 kilometres of walking trails that meander through temperate rainforest and along beautiful beaches. Many of these trails double as cycle lanes, making bike hire an excellent way to explore the park. Stanley Park is home to numerous historical landmarks, including Brockton Point Lighthouse and the iconic First Nations totem poles. Nature lovers can marvel at the 800-year-old hollow cedar tree or the biodiverse Beaver Lake, while art enthusiasts will enjoy discovering sculptures and colourful gardens dotted throughout the park.
The park also boasts an impressive aquarium, a large outdoor swimming pool, and several cafés and restaurants tucked among the lush greenery. Wildlife sightings are common here, with bald eagles, bats, raccoons, and squirrels all calling the park home. Add all this together, and it’s easy to see why Stanley Park is considered one of Canada’s greatest urban green spaces.
