Masirah Island

For years only the most intrepid surfers and windsurfers made it out to Masirah Island, drawn by the excellent winds and great waves. Now, more and more people are taking the small ferry over to appreciate not just the watersports, but to see nesting turtles and enjoy the sense of being somewhere truly remote and seemingly cut off from the outside world.

Barr al-Hickman

Barr al-Hickman is a peninsula abutting the southern edge of the Wahiba Sands. You leave the world of high dunes and desert scrub vegetation and move into an ethereal place where the ocean fights a subtle and insidious battle with the land for each grain of sand. The peninsula is so flat the brain struggles, eyes trying to pick out some defining feature as white sand merges seamlessly with the ocean, which in turn blurs into the sky. The vast tidal flats are home to many birds, and the odd carcass of a rusting 4x4, stuck beyond redemption in the quicksand that lies not far from the marked tracks adds to the slightly unreal atmosphere – Barr al-Hickman is a unique and special place.

Lunch with a Bedouin Family

The Bedouin people of Oman are the country's traditional nomadic communities, mostly inhabiting the Wahiba Sands area. In centuries gone by they travelled across the dunes raising camels and goats, living in tented accommodation and a very simple way of life. It's no secret that the modern world has changed this over the last couple of decades, and authentic Bedouin life is becoming far less commonplace with many locals splitting their time between the desert and more modern villages and towns nearby, but visitors to the country can still experience a taste of the Oman of times gone by. On this excursion in the Wahiba Sands you'll stop by a traditional Bedouin home and enjoy lunch prepared by nomads. You'll witness how they turn simple ingredients – bread, rice, local meat or fish – into a delicious feast, followed by Omani coffee (which is coffee like no other!) and of course an abundance of plump, sweet dates to finish. During the meal your guide will help to translate conversation between you and the family, offering the perfect way for you to connect with the locals and understand their culture on a personal level.

Wadi Bani Khalid

Just north of the Wahiba Sands and usually visited on your way to or from the desert, Wadi Bani Khalid is considered one of Oman’s most scenic spots. The gravel track picks a path between date palms as the valley walls close in further and further. Eventually, you arrive at a series of emerald-green water pools that are replenished by a stream flowing year-round. The stream disappears up an impossibly narrow crack in the rock, which you can only follow by picking your way along its rim. It’s a popular spot and there are shady pavilions and bridges leading out to rocky outcrops in the pools.
