Hotel overview

Flanked by steeply-rising sand dunes, the Desert Nights Camp comprises 30 permanent luxury tents. Tent is actually a misleading description as these are about as far from a wet weekend’s camping in the UK. The walls are a fixed brick construction and you have a peaked canvas roof. Air-conditioning keeps the temperature pleasant and you have an ensuite bathroom. The room is furnished with a large, comfortable bed and traditional Omani decorations and furniture, giving you a real sense of place. The restaurant provides dinner under the stars to the accompaniment of local musicians and there are a variety of excursions on offer like quad biking and camel rides. The Desert Nights Camp is by some distance the most luxurious way to experience the Wahiba Sands.

Wadi Bani Khalid

Just north of the Wahiba Sands and usually visited on your way to or from the desert, Wadi Bani Khalid is considered one of Oman’s most scenic spots. The gravel track picks a path between date palms as the valley walls close in further and further. Eventually, you arrive at a series of emerald-green water pools that are replenished by a stream flowing year-round. The stream disappears up an impossibly narrow crack in the rock, which you can only follow by picking your way along its rim. It’s a popular spot and there are shady pavilions and bridges leading out to rocky outcrops in the pools.

Camel riding

The desert camps all offer the chance to take a camel ride into the dunes. Once you get used to the rhythmic gait and the lurching mounting and dismounting, you can start to appreciate the Bedouin’s reliance on these animals, so ideal for crossing vast tracts of sand. From your elevated viewpoint you can follow the lines of golden crests and crescents all the way to the horizon.

Dune Bashing

4x4 vehicles have partly supplanted the camel as the favoured transport of the desert Bedouin, and in their skilled hands the Toyotas and Landrovers seem to be able to climb any dune and navigate a path through the trickiest bits of the desert. There is a real skill in this, and you can admire it whilst enjoying the unique thrill of cresting a sandy peak and watching the whole desert vista open up below you.

Masirah Island

For years only the most intrepid surfers and windsurfers made it out to Masirah Island, drawn by the excellent winds and great waves. Now, more and more people are taking the small ferry over to appreciate not just the watersports, but to see nesting turtles and enjoy the sense of being somewhere truly remote and seemingly cut off from the outside world.

Barr al-Hickman

Barr al-Hickman is a peninsula abutting the southern edge of the Wahiba Sands. You leave the world of high dunes and desert scrub vegetation and move into an ethereal place where the ocean fights a subtle and insidious battle with the land for each grain of sand. The peninsula is so flat the brain struggles, eyes trying to pick out some defining feature as white sand merges seamlessly with the ocean, which in turn blurs into the sky. The vast tidal flats are home to many birds, and the odd carcass of a rusting 4x4, stuck beyond redemption in the quicksand that lies not far from the marked tracks adds to the slightly unreal atmosphere – Barr al-Hickman is a unique and special place.
