Travel Inspiration 28th December 2022

Where You're Going This Year

A brand, spanking new year is around the corner. 12 fresh months, 52 weeks, 365 days – all just waiting to be filled with adventures. Travel was well and truly back in 2022 (thank goodness!), and 2023 is set to be bursting with holidays left, right and centre. We’ve been busy designing holidays all over the World, here’s a handy infographic to show where you’re going (so far) over the next 12 months… Have you booked your 2023 holiday yet? If not, now’s the time!   Get inspired…   Wildlife, nature and Pura Vida lifestyle is top of the bill in 2023. Costa Rica is the most popular holiday destination amongst our clients (so far), with 12% of holidays heading to the nature lover’s paradise.   Costa Rica holiday highlights ☑ Visit Arenal , Costa Rica’s adventure capital, and zip line through the canopy, soak in the hot springs, kayak in the shadow of a live volcano and hike over hanging bridges. ☑ Soak up the wild beauty of the Osa Peninsula . Reaching this region is a bit of a challenge, but being simply the best place to see wildlife in all of Costa Rica, we’d argue it’s more than worth it! ☑ Sun yourself on one of the beautiful beaches along the Northern Pacific Coast . Don’t miss a visit to the tranquil Nicoya Peninsula (and a stay at the incredible Lagarta Lodge , too!) Costa Rica holidays     A county of so much variation and contrast, it’s not tricky to see why Vietnam makes up a huge 10.9% of our 2023 holidays already.   Vietnam holiday highlights ☑ Float amidst the towering limestone rocks of Asia’s most spectacular landscape. A cruise on Ha Long Bay is a must for any Vietnam holiday. ☑ Enjoy a slower pace of life for a few days in the yellow-washed gem that is Hoi An . With cobbled streets that come alive with the light of thousands of lanterns after dark, small tailoring shops, riverside cafes and traditional merchant houses, it’s a special place. ☑ Trek with a local hill tribe through the stunning landscapes around Sapa . Vibrant green valleys, perfectly terraced rice paddies, fast-flowing streams and countless waterfalls await you here. Vietnam holidays     A Jordan holiday is so much more than just a visit to Petra. As 9.9% of our booked clients are set to find out next year…   Jordan holiday highlights ☑ You simply can’t visit Jordan without making a trip to “the rose-red city half as old as time”. Petra is as stunning as it is historic, prepare to pinch yourself once you’ve made your way down the Siq Canyon and are treated to that first glimpse of the famous Treasury Tomb. ☑ Experience the feeling of weightlessness with a bob about in the turquoise waters of the Dead Sea . Found at the lowest point on the Earth’s surface (422 metres below sea level, to be exact), it’s a truly unique place to visit – and the health benefits claimed of its waters are worth the trip, too! ☑ Visit the ancient city of Jerash . Found just outside Amman , Jordan’s capital, these ruins are incredibly well preserved and anyone who loves a bit of history in their holiday mix, will be in their element here. Jordan holidays     South Africa is the destination that started HA. It was the very first place we ever sent clients all those many years ago. And, with 8.7% of holidays heading here next year, we’re chuffed that it’s still as popular as ever.   South Africa holiday highlights ☑ Most South Africa holidays we design, start in the incredible capital of Cape Town . And what a welcome. Gorgeous beaches ready for sundowners, fantastic shopping, fascinating history and world-class food and drink – all set against a backdrop of the unmistakable Table Mountain. It’s not hard to see why Cape Town is considered one of the most iconic cities in the World. ☑ Animals, animals, animals. The quest for the Big 5 is at the top of most South Africa holiday wish lists. And, with incredible safari offerings all over the country, wildlife sightings are (almost) guaranteed to be brilliant here. They’re wild animals of course, they go where they please. But, whether you visit Kruger , the Eastern Cape , Limpogo , KwaZulu-Natal , the Kalahari , or one of the many other reserves – we fancy your chances! ☑ Head to the Great Escarpment , to take in some of the very best landscapes South Africa has to offer. With waterfalls, river canyons, forests, wildlife and viewpoints galore (don’t miss God’s Window!) – it’s a great addition to any South Africa holiday. South Africa holidays     It’s finally back! It’s been off the holiday list for far too long, so we couldn’t be happier that 8.5% of the booked travels in 2023 are heading off to this captivating country. Bullet trains, robot cafes, perfect gardens, bamboo forests, ancient walking trails and so much culture awaits.   Japan holiday highlights ☑ We’re not sure you can visit Japan, without experiencing its largest, craziest and most robot-filled cities. Tokyo is often considered the biggest metropolis on the planet – and we love it. For all of its neon lights and progressive technology, its historic soul is very much intact with countless temples, shrines and gardens dotted around the city. ☑ The spiritual heart of Japan, Kyoto is bursting with shrines and history. Step back in time with a bike ride down the ancient streets of the Gion neighbourhood (keep your eyes peeled for Geisha!), head to the bright red gates of the Fushimi Inari Shrine and even test your sword skills at a Ninja workshop . ☑ Experience a different side of Japanese life and culture with some time in Takayama . The perfect base from which to visit to beautiful, rural countryside (the Christmas-card village of Shirakawago is very close by!) – the antique wooden buildings will charm you in no time at all. Japan holidays     Without doubt the must exotic and alluring getaway you can have within a 4-hour flight from the UK, it’s no wonder that Morocco is always a popular one with our clients, snapping up 8.2% of 2023 booking so far.   Morocco holiday highlights ☑ Spend a day or two on the golden sands of the Erg Chebbi. It’s one of only two places in Morocco where you can see the start of the great Sahara Desert. Take a camel ride across the dunes and sleep under the stars. A highlight of any Morocco holiday for sure. ☑ Explore the bohemian streets, pretty medina and blue-washed walls of Chefchaouen . Perfect for photography lovers, this stunning town is set against a backdrop of mountains with so many trails to explore! ☑ For a real slice of authentic Morocco, venture into the High Atlas Mountains and spend some time with the Berbers . There are trails to explore, mountains to climb, fresh mint tea to drink and home-cooked traditional dinners with local families to enjoy. Morocco holidays     Sri Lanka had a bit of a rocky start to the year, but we’re delighted to say it’s fully back on the holiday radar now! With 7% of booked holidays next year visiting this jewel-shaped island, we’re so excited for more of our clients to fall in love with all it has to offer.   Sri Lanka holiday highlights ☑ Take on of the most picturesque train rides on earth up into the rolling tea hills in the middle of the country. Make the most of the slight drop in temperature and take a hike to Lipton’s Seat, enjoy a tour of a local tea factory and indulge in High Tea at the Grand Hotel Nuwara Eliya. ☑ Dig out your binoculars for a safari at Yala National Park . With a varied ecosystem made up of monsoon forests, grasslands, sandy beaches and wetlands – the animal sightings are brilliant here. Plus, said to be home to one of the highest concentrations of leopard on earth, it’s THE place to go if you’re hoping to catch a glimpse of one of the illusive cats. ☑ Spend some time in Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle to get a taste of the country’s rich history. Climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress, explore the Dambulla Cave Temples and take a bike ride around the ancient city ruins of Polonnaruwa. Sri Lanka holiday     Namibia has been having a bit of a moment recently and – quite rightly – growing in popularity as a Southern Africa holiday destination. An impressive 6.6% of HA holidays next year are heading to this otherworldly landscape…   Namibia holiday highlights ☑ One of the big hitters of Namibia holidays, the sand seas of the Namib Desert (the oldest desert on earth don’t you know!) around Sossusvlei are something very special. The graceful curves of the massive glowing dunes stand in stark contrast to the other-worldly white pans “vleis”, with dead trees and cracked mud, that lay in their shadow. ☑ The Skeleton Coast forms a division between mainland Namibia and the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean. Dotted with shipwrecks, without doubt, this coast line is one of Namibia’s most unspoiled and remote areas. Experience it in true style with this ‘Flying the Skeleton Coast’ holiday. ☑ Head to the wide open plains of Etosha National Park to experience one of Southern Africa’s premier safari destinations. Boasting incredible numbers of elephant, zebra, giraffe, antelope and big cats, (plus fairly good number of elusive Black rhino!), a safari adventure awaits here. Namibia holidays     Nabbing 6.1% of next year’s holiday bookings so far, the orangutan-filled rainforests of Borneo are looking to be popular over the next 12 months.   Borneo holiday highlights ☑ A nature-lovers dream, the Danum Valley Conservation Area is one of the world’s most complex ecosystems. It’s perfect for wildlife spotting, with orangutan, Pygmy elephant and clouded leopard spotted frequently. The area is strongly protected, and access tightly restricted, so make sure you factor in a stay at the beautiful Borneo Rainforest Lodge to experience it for yourself. ☑ Visit the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre in the heart of Sepilok. Set amidst lush rainforest and explored via a series of elevated walkways, this is a brilliant place to come for a taste of Borneo wildlife – with the chance to do good along the way. ☑ The island paradise of Gaya Island is the perfect place to unwind on your Borneo holiday after all of the orangutan-spotting excitement. White-sand beaches, fringed with lush palms on one side and turquoise waters the other. Dive on in. Borneo holidays     Canada is vast, diverse and packed full of extraordinarily wide range of scenery and experiences. Whether you’re after beautiful beaches, snowy mountains, wildlife encounters, adrenaline-pumping outdoor adventures or a tranquil lake cruise – it’s got you covered. That 5.2% of bookings are in for a real treat…   Canada holiday highlights ☑ Take one of the World’s most iconic journeys, a train ride on the Rocky Mountain Express through the towering snow-capped peaks of the the Rocky Mountains. This two-day rail journey takes you all the way from Vancouver to beautiful Jasper. ☑ Experience the power of Mother Nature at full force with a visit to Niagara Falls . You can take a boat ride right up to the falls, fly over the top of it or even walk right behind the plummeting water. Plus, nearby Niagara-on-the-Lake with its artisan shops, art galleries and cafes is the perfect base. ☑ You can’t truly appreciate the beauty of Canada until you’ve seen Banff with your own eyes. Canada’s very first National Park (created in 1883), the bright blue water set against the backdrop of mountain wilderness, is pinch-yourself perfect.     The charm of the Cambodian smile is ready and waiting to welcome 4% of HA holiday bookings in 2023 (so far, that is!). We have a real soft spot for this country, its beauty, sights, and its warm, resilient people.   Cambodia holiday highlights ☑ Fall in love with the charms of Siem Reap . Obviously you have to spend some time exploring the ancient temple complex of Angkor Wat , but there’s so much more on offer here. Take a street food tour by vespa and enjoy some of the many sophisticated restaurants and chic bars popping up all over the town. Don’t miss an evening at the Phare Circus either, such talent! ☑ Sun yourself on the secret islands of the south coast . With powdery white sand beaches, lapped with clear blue waters, these small islands boast dramatic headlands and jungle forests. They’re also home to luxurious hideaways perfect for a slice of well deserved R&R after time spent soaking up the history and culture of Cambodia. ☑ Journey up into the Cardamom Mountains . This remote virgin rainforest is one of the last remaining habitats for Asian elephants, bears, tigers and the Siamese crocodile. With deserted river islands, thundering waterfalls and Wildlife Sanctuaries to visit, the Cardamom Mountains would be a great addition to any Cambodia holiday. Cambodia holidays     Oman is such a unique holiday destination – and we can’t wait to send 3.5% of our 2023 clients there. With cities, deserts, rich culture, mountain villages and so much history to explore, it has all the makings of a great adventure for all the family.   Oman holiday highlights ☑ Start your adventure with some time in the capital of Muscat . Old Muscat and Muttrah make up the historical heart of the city, with palaces to explore, forts to walk around, giant chandeliers to be wowed by and old souqs to get lost in. With beach resorts nearby and the option to take a sunset Dhow cruise , too, there’s something for everyone. ☑ It might be just a few hours from Muscat, but the Wahiba Sands feel anything but. Stretching nearly 200 miles from north to south, you’ll find towering golden dunes, deep valleys, local Bedouins and an awful lot of camels here. What’s more, with some beautiful tented camps to choose from, you’ll be relaxing in comfort under the starry desert skies. ☑ Venture up towards the Hajar Mountains and explore the sheer canyons, terraced villages and forts around Nizwa . You’ll feel a million miles away from day-to-day life here – a real insight into rural Omani life. Oman holidays     Whether you visit the North Island, the South Island, or both, New Zealand has all of the makings of an adventure worthy of your 2023 holidays. With 2.4% of booked holidays heading here, we’re already excited to see the travel snaps.     New Zealand holiday highlights ☑ Get away from it all and spend some time in Abel Tasman National Park . All of New Zealand is staggeringly beautiful, but there’s something extra special about this region. With sheltered turquoise waters perfect for kayaking and so many incredible walking trails with a more breathtaking view waiting around every corner – it’s a must. ☑ Be captivated by the marine life playground that is Kaikoura . This is THE place to go to spot giant sperm whales, playful dusky dolphins, seals, sweeping albatross and so much more. ☑ Tucked away in the far south-western corner of the South Island, you’ll find the Fjordland National Park. A boat ride through Milford Sound (or the slightly quieter Doubtful Sound), will certainly make you New Zealand holiday highlights list.   So, where makes your holiday wish list?   Latest posts 15 of our favourite holiday ideas Summer holiday ideas: Our team share their favourite summer itineraries The hibernation’s over: Canada holidays are back! Where to go in Peru – 5 Peruvian Priorities

If anyone mentions Peru to you as a holiday destination, we’d hazard a guess that the iconic Inca ruins of Machu Picchu come to mind before anything else. Yes, Machu Picchu deserves every little bit of hype it gets, but a Peru holiday is so much more. Picture this. You’re looking down through your airplane window at the most colourful patchwork quilt of a landscape you’ve ever seen. That’s Peru. And this isn’t just an empty landscape either — there are hundreds of ancient ruins strewn throughout the country, from ancient civilizations past and thousands of miles of coastline, to the majestic Andean mountains lining the horizon.   Our Dawn has walked the streets of Cusco, taken in the rewarding and iconic sight of Machu Picchu and explored so much of this amazing country. Below she shares some of her Peru highlights and 5 places you can’t miss…   1. Cusco Stroll down the beautiful cobbled streets of Cusco , set beautifully against a backdrop of snow-covered mountains in the distance. The capital of the Incan Empire has countless history to uncover, beautiful colonial architecture and opportunities for adventure around every corner. ✓ Take a horse riding adventure around Cusco’s ruins ✓ Venture into the surrounding hills by mountain bike to explore the ancient historic site of Sacsayhuaman ✓ Learn to cook local dishes from local people on this Cusco cookery course.   Peru’s Inti Raymi Festival – the Incan Festival of the Sun God   Dawn’s Top Tip for Cusco “Aim to be in Cuzco over June 24th for the Inti Raymi Festival – it’s so special. This Festival of the Sun is the most important Incan celebration marking the return of the sun (Inti) during the winter solstice. There are costumes, dancing and reenactments of ancient rituals – Peruvian experiences don’t get much more authentic than this.”     2. Meet the locals in Peru’s Sacred Valley You’ll pass through the Sacred Valley of the Incas to get from Cusco to Machu Picchu. But, if that’s all you see of it, you’re doing your Peru holiday a disservice. More than 63 miles long and jam-packed with Incan Ruins, authentic local encounters and ancient civilisations to explore, this is a must for your Peru holiday. ✓ Tick off the bucket list with a day hike to Machu Picchu. ✓ Take a mountain bike tour to the working Incan salt pans of Maras and the Moray ruins. ✓ Try your hand at white water rafting through the ancient valley.   Dawn’s Sacred Valley Top Tip “Don’t miss Pisac ! Famous for its agricultural terraces, and impressive craft market with vibrant market stalls filling the main square every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. It’s a great spot to see locals peddling their colourful wares or to pick up handmade souvenirs to take home!”     3. Lima   Lima, the City of Kings, is perched on the Pacific coastline of Peru. Peru’s capital is packed with history stretching back through ancient civilisations, colonial architecture and countless museums  – but it’s definitely one for the foodies, too. Home to some of the best restaurants in South America, you’ll eat well here. ✓ Sample some of the best on this ‘Gourmet Lima’ food tour . ✓ Explore the city by night, lit up by their incredible fountain show . ✓ Learn all about South American history at the Larco Museum.   Dawn’s Top Tip for Lima “Wander along the Malecon and explore the artistic and bohemian neighbourhood of Barranco, too. There are plenty of lovely oceanfront bars to grab a drink at there. Don’t leave before you’ve taken a walk across the ‘Puente de los Suspiros’ bridge and enjoyed all the street art!”   4. Lake Titicaca   Factor a few days at Lake Titicaca into your Peru itinerary if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Nestled in the Andes Mountains, Lake Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the world – and being so high, means the weather can be quite unpredictable! Its altitude also brings a rich biodiversity to the lake – it’s home to more than 450 species of bird, several different species of fish and plenty of insects! ✓ The 10 hour luxury train ride from Cusco to Lake Titicaca – one of the most beautiful train journeys in all of South America. ✓ Venture out onto the lake to visit the Uros floating reed islands , visit some of the islanders traditional homes and learn about this unique way of life.   Dawn’s Top Titicaca Tip “Visit the Uros Islands and Taquile. When on the floating Uros islands, you’ll meet and interact with the indigenous Indian and experience first-hand how they live day to day! Head on to Taquile island and take in the simply beautiful view of all of Lake Titicaca, just magical!”   5. And, of course, Machu Picchu   Of course, we couldn’t write a list of Peru holiday highlights without including this. One of the most famous archaeological sites on earth, and one of the Wonders of the World, Machu Picchu needs no introduction. Built around 1450 but only discovered in 1911, it has since become one of the most famous treks in the world and the top things to do in South America. A visit to Machu Picchu feels a bit like stepping back in time. Once you’ve laced on your hiking boots, adapted to the altitude and taken on the hike (unless you choose to take the train of course!), you’ll find yourself winding through lush, green cloud forests with endless views of snow-capped peaks along the way.     When you make it to the viewpoint, it’s hard not to feel like you’ve uncovered a hidden world. Wander through the ancient terraces and take in the atmosphere as you ponder endlessly how the Incan people were able to construct such a magnificent city, without the use of modern tools and equipment.   Dawn’s Top Tip for Machu Picchu “ Machu Picchu is one of the most incredible places in Peru, but you can make it even better. Get up early on your second day and hike Huayna Picchu as this lesser-known piste offers amazing view back down onto Machu Picchu. A head for heights is essential but the views from the top are breathtaking.”     Peru holiday ideas we love   Quick Escape to Machu Picchu Didn’t think a quick trip to Peru was possible? Think again. With plenty of direct flights from the UK weekly, this 9 day adventure to experience one of the Wonders of the World is more than doable. Tell me more   Classic Peru Archaeological highlights and cultural treasures are interspersed with cosmopolitan and colonial cities, the serene waters of Lake Titicaca and spectacular landscapes on this 16-day Peru holiday . Of course, with the iconic site of Machu Picchu thrown in, too. Dive in

5 of the top countries in the World

Somehow, it’s December and we find ourselves buried in an ever-growing to-do list of Christmas shopping, festive decorating, mince-pie tasting (we don’t mind that bit) and, at the moment, football-score-checking. If you’re anything like us though, you’ll be taking the time to look forward to 2023 and all of the travelling adventures it might bring. To lend a hand with narrowing down your holiday options, here are 5 of the World’s best countries (according to the recent Condé Nast Reader Awards!)     Japan   Japan is a country of contradictions. From robot restaurants to peaceful shrines, high-rise neon-lit cites to snow-capped mountainscapes, from the busiest pedestrian crossing in the world to ancient trails tucked away in hidden valleys, there’s something new and surprising to discover around every turn.   Japan holiday highlights we love Spend a night at a monastery in the beautifully remote temple town of Koyasan. You’ll learn about ancient traditions from Buddhist months and wake up to the sound of morning prayers. Unleash your inner ninja at a workshop designed to teach you the legend, art and history of these traditional warriors. (A great one for kids!) Explore Kyoto’s picturesque backstreets by bike , and keep your eyes peeled for the local Geisha or maiko in the famous Gion neighbourhood.     Morocco   Crumbling kasbahs, ancient mountain villages, bustling cities, maze-like souks bursting with sounds, smells and colours, breezy coastal towns and the golden sands of the Sahara desert. All of that, just a short hop on a flight from the UK. Morocco really does have something for everyone.   Must-have Morocco Moments Taste the flavours of Morocco on a food-tasting tour through the medina of Marrakesh with your local guide. Get a real, authentic taste of Moroccan life by spending a whole day with a local family in Fez Take a camel trip through the Sahara desert to your luxury tented camp , ready to spend a night under the stars. Explore the ancient Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou , boasting more credits than most oscar winners, you’ll feel like Lawrence of Arabia here…     Sri Lanka   From tea plantations and white-sand beaches, to elephant-filled jungle safaris and whale-watching on the Indian Ocean – a Sri Lanka holiday will be packed full of magic moments from start to finish. And that’s before we even mention the food and the smiling locals. If you’re looking for an active outdoor adventure in stunning UNESCO National parks, a bucket-list ticking safari, authentic insights into a rich culture or some lazy time on some seriously beautiful beaches – you can do it all on a Sri Lanka holiday.   Sri Lanka adventures we love Visit a local village and help to prepare lunch before eating with a Sri Lankan family in a traditional home. Experience one of the most beautiful train rides on earth through Sri Lanka’s Tea Country.     Israel   Israel has so much history and opportunity for adventure packed into its relatively small space. There are many sites to see, all of which boast their own distinct vibe whilst remaining true to their Israeli roots and culture.   Israel adventures you can’t miss Listen to the prayers as they float around the skies of Jerusalem and enjoy a Shabbat dinner with locals . Soak up the atmosphere in Tel Aviv on a C ity Tour . Explore the Holy Sites of Galilee. Take a tour along Israel’s Mediterranean Coastline.       South Africa   It’s no secret that we’re big fans of South Africa here at HA. Being the first ever country we designed holidays to, we’re chuffed to see it make the Condé Nast list. The Rainbow Nation is a special one in so many ways. Its rich and often troubled history tells a story of strength and resilience, its never-ending safari plains are the places where safari dreams are made, its dramatic roads are some of the best to drive on earth, its cities are home to some world-class restaurants and last – but certainly not least – its wine is delicious. What’s more, the pound is strong against the rand right now, so it’s great value! 2023 could be the year for a holiday in one of the most varied countries on earth.   A handful of South Africa highlights Fly around the stunning roads of the Cape Peninsula in style – by sidecar! Where to hang with cheeky primates in the wild

Did you know there are more than 300 species of primate on earth? Ranging from the cheeky monkey all the way through to giant gorillas, and even us humans! So, if you’re potty about primates and would love to encounter them ethically in the wild, here are 5 spots we recommend to do just that. 1. Borneo Kinabatangan River The Kinabatangan River is one of Asia’s most important waterways and is a brilliant spot to see two rare primates in the wild – that can only be found in Borneo! As you take a boat trip down the river, keep your eyes on the canopy above. You’ll almost certainly be treated to the sight of playful (and nosey!) Proboscis monkeys hanging from the trees – they’re everywhere! They are odd-looking creatures, with their bulbous noses, you can’t miss them! If you’re lucky you might just see a flash of orange and catch a glimpse of the endangered Borneo orangutan swinging through the trees. As a result of forest clearing for oil palm plantations, the Borneo orangutan is one of the 25 most endangered primate species on earth. Find out more Where to stay on the Kinabatangan River We love the Sukau Rainforest Lodge (and apparently, so does Sir David Attenborough!). Perched on the banks of the river, this luxurious lodge is the perfect place to stay to immerse yourself in the wildlife that Borneo is known for. Not only that though, with strong commitments to conservation, community development, sustainable tourism and green policies, you’ll stay safe in the knowledge that protection of this special area is always priority one. You might just spot elephants swimming in the river directly in front of the lodge, or orangutans swinging through the trees above whilst you tuck into breakfast. And did we mention the stunning swimming pool? Danum Valley The Danum Valley Conservation Area is recognised as the world’s most complex of ecosystems. New species of birds and plants are being discovered all the time and this dense forest is home to many endangered species such as Pgymy elephant, clouded leopard, banteng and the rare Wallace flying frog. The trees reach up to heights of more than 70 metres in some places, so it’s a fantastic spot to see orangutan playing through the trees. There are estimated to be more than 500 wild orangutan here, all protected and monitored closely by a conservation team. You’ll also have a chance of spotting the Maroon langurs (otherwise known as Red Leaf monkeys) and the endangered Borneo gibbon in the Danum Valley. Did you know, gibbons aren’t monkeys – they’re apes! They might not be as sizable as their gorilla cousins (far from it in fact), but with their lack of tail, apes they are! Find out more on this Orangutans and Tropical Islands Borneo holiday idea Where to stay in Danum Valley, Borneo If you’re visiting this magical area of Borneo, you won’t go wrong with a stay at Borneo Rainforest Lodge . Nestled deep in the heart of the rainforest of Sabah, this lodge really is the epitome of jungle indulgence. This boutique rainforest escape boasts one of the most stunning vistas you can imagine, private dipping pools and truly exceptional service. For an extra special experience, opt for one of the luxurious riverside villas where you’ll have your very own butler and a huge terrace – perfect for wildlife spotting!   2. Costa Rica Corcovado National Park, the Osa Peninsula Corcovado National Park is a true oasis for wildlife lovers. Found on the remote Osa Peninsula the park boasts a huge population of Costa Rica’s four species of monkeys. You can see (and hear) Howler monkeys swinging through the trees (they’re as loud as they look!) as you eat your breakfast, Squirrel monkeys playing in the canopy, white-faced Capuchin monkeys and if you’re lucky you might catch sight of the endangered Geoffroy’s spider monkey, too. Explore the Osa Peninsula in depth on this 12-day adventure Where to stay on the Osa Peninsula El Remanso is, without a doubt, one of our favourite lodges in the whole of Costa Rica. The service is impeccable, it’s great value and the wildlife experiences in the vicinity are second to none. Set amidst countless pristine jungle trails where you’ll spot monkeys, sloths, a myriad of birdlife and more – you’re guaranteed a superb experience here. What’s more, after you’ve returned from a wildlife walk, cruise or kayaking adventure, you can relax by the gorgeous swimming pool and soak up the sunshine, all to nature’s glorious backing track of the rainforest.   3. Uganda Bwindi Impenetrable National Park Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is the place on our wonderful earth to get a glimpse of the magnificent mountain gorilla in the wild. The largest of primates, the majesty of these giant apes is hard to exaggerate. Their shiny black coats, impressive stature and piercing eyes that appear to hold several lifetimes’ worth of wisdom. A trek through the park with a ranger is the only way to experience this. They will make sure you stay at a safe distance from the gorillas (both for your safety, and theirs!) Experience it for yourself on this Classic Uganda holiday Where to stay in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park Mahogany Springs is found close to the entrance to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, in the farmland that stretches down towards Munyanga River. With a range of accommodation on offer, (including superior suites, a luxurious honeymoon suite and a space perfect for families), all with staggering panoramic terraces, this is a fantastic place to base yourself for your Bwindi adventures.   4. Zanzibar When you think of Zanzibar , it quite rightly conjures up images of a lush archipelago fringed by bright white sand and bright turquoise ocean. However, did you know it’s also home to its own breed of primate? The Zanzibar red colobus monkey is actually one of the world’s most endangered primates with there said to be less than 2,000 of them left on earth. Endemic to Zanzibar’s main island of Unguja, the country are working hard to protect their habitat and remaining population. Pair Zanzibar with a wildlife adventure in Tanzania on this Perfect Safari and Beach holiday Where to stay in Zanzibar Sat on what Conde Nast Traveller magazine has named as one of the top 30 beaches in the world, Baraza is easily the best 5-star hotel in Zanzibar. With just 30 villas, all varying in size (but not varying in opulence!), stunning pool, a world-class spa, dive centre, exquisite all-inclusive restaurant – this is luxury and excellence at its finest. It’s one of our top choices for a Zanzibar holiday, always.   5. South Africa Cape of Good Hope The Cape of Good Hope is just an easy drive from Cape Town and is a great place to come face to face with Chacma baboons. However, take our word for it, they are mischievous! Make sure you have absolutely no food visible (or anything that looks like food for that matter). Gabby from Team HA had a very near miss when a baboon mistook a packet of tissues for a snack and made a beeline for it – and her! Don’t be surprised to return to your car and find a baboon sitting on your roof either, it’s commonplace here! Explore all that the Cape region has to offer on this 10-night Cape Escape holiday Where to stay near Cape of Good Hope, South Africa The Cape of Good Hope is on Cape Town’s doorstep, so easily reachable within a short drive. We hugely recommend you drive via Chapman’s Peak Drive to be wowed the entire way! We love Abbey Manor Guest House in Cape Town, perched on the slopes of Table Mountain in the leafy suburb of Oranjezicht it has a lovely French Boudoir, small boutique hotel feel to it. With its large solar-heated swimming pool is the perfect place to lounge in the sunshine whilst lapping up the stunning views of Table Mountain. Plus, it’s only a short walk from a lively sidewalk of lovely cafes and restaurants. Kruger National Park There are few wildlife havens on earth that come close to the wonder that is Kruger National Park . Sure to be a highlight of any South African holiday, the majesty of this place far exceeds any superlatives! As well as the enviable population of Big 5 game, Kruger is also home to countless Vervet monkeys. As cheeky as they are cute, they can be spotted throughout Kruger moving in groups of 15-30. They also do a great job of warning other animals of potential threats and dangers in the vicinity. There are also an estimated 300 troops of naughty baboons living in Kruger – so it’s not just the lions you need to watch out for! Kruger is a must on any South African Grand Tour . Find out more here. Where to stay in Kruger National Park Bataleur Safari Camp is one of our favourite lodges in Kruger National Park. Found in the Timbavati Game Reserve, it’s a lovely comfortable camp with a focus on minimising its ecological footprint. A stay here is so authentic, with the camp seeming to merge effortlessly into its surroundings. It’s also sat overlooking a riverbed and seasonal waterhole which draws a wide range of game that you can spot right from the lodge, in between game drives! There are also guided bushwalks on offer if you want to experience getting even closer to the wildlife that call this incredible park home.

Walk the World: 20 of the best hikes and climbs in the world

Do you get a real thrill from lacing up your hiking shoes on your travels and conquering an epic trek, hike, or mountain under the steam of your own two feet? Do you love nothing more than finding your own way to a far-reaching view that makes you feel teeny-tiny?  This list is for you. Because, sometimes letting our magnificent world make you feel small is a good thing! Below are 20 ultimate hikes around our wonderful world that deserve a place on your bucket list (if they haven’t got one already!) Lace up, dig deep and let’s go… 1. Inca Trail, Peru This is one of the most famous hikes in the world for good reason. The Inca Trail is an active adventure sure to light a fire of adrenaline in your belly. If you choose to tackle the full four-day hike, you’ll be led along ancient pathways deep into the lush Peruvian countryside as you climb through the clouds ever higher into the Andes mountains. Waiting for you at the end though, is perhaps the greatest reward of any hike on earth: the iconic wonder of the world  – Machu Picchu. If a multi-day hike is a little much for you, don’t worry! There are shorter, more accessible options on offer. Opt to hop on the train to the ‘Km 104’ station and enjoy a four-hour trek up through the Sun Gate to the stunning ancient civilization of Machu Picchu. You’ll still get your fix of the awe-inspiring scenery this amazing part of the world is known for. Take me there   2. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania Mount Kilimanjaro is a seriously impressive mountain. And it makes for a seriously impressive hiking achievement to add to your logbook! A trek to the top (5,895m above sea level!), doesn’t involve any advanced climbing abilities, but the high altitude and steep climbs make this a challenge not to be sniffed at! To allow time to acclimatize to the altitude, you’ll need around 6-8 nights on the mountain (the more the better for success rates!). Accommodation en route is basic, consisting mainly of tented rooms with varying levels of facilities. There are no permanent camps on the route, so all of your supplies will be carried up and down by porters. If you’re not one to enjoy getting up amongst nature and enjoy roughing it a little, this might not be your cup of tea! Find out more   3. W Circuit, Torres Del Paine NP, Chile The ‘W Circuit’ in Torres Del Paine national park is frequently considered to be one of the most spectacular hikes in the world. Rugged snowy peaks, bright blue alpine lakes, staggering rock formations and far-reaching wilderness wherever you look – it’s magic. The hike follows a ‘W’ shaped route (did you guess?!) and will take either 5 or 7 days, with around 8 hours of hiking per day (depending on how often you stop to take snaps of the truly breathtaking surroundings). There are countless highlights including the Towers’ Base viewpoint, the retreating Grey Glacier and the French Valley. You’re guaranteed a hike that disconnects you from the hustle and bustle of daily life and fully immerses you in the boundless beauty of Chilean Patagonia. While you don’t need to be a pro-hiker to complete the W Circuit, a good level of fitness and preparation is required to get the most out of the experience! This really is the trek of a lifetime. Take me there   4. The Milford Track, New Zealand The Milford Track was once declared ‘the finest walk in the world’ (in the London Spectator more than 100 years ago actually!) and it really is picture-postcard perfect the whole way around the 58km trail. You’ll walk across suspension bridges, traverse mountain passes at the base of towering icy peaks and the tallest waterfall in New Zealand; Sutherland Falls. Find out more about New Zealand’s Fiordland   5. Half Dome, Yosemite, California The Half Dome in California’s Yosemite national park is a true icon of a rock formation. As you hike into the wilderness, prepare yourself for an exceptional challenge. This 14-16 mile round trip is not for the unfit or the unprepared! It’s a serious challenge both physically and mentally and – although the panoramic views and sense of achievement will be worth it for sure – it shouldn’t be attempted willy-nilly! The cable section is by far the most infamous. The cables are restrung along the rockface every year and allow climbers to reach the summit without any climbing gear. To add to the challenge, there are black bears often seen in the area, so be sure to keep any food well wrapped up and stored away, or you might gain an uninvited hiking buddy! Most climbers take between 10 and 12 hours to complete the hike – you’ll have earned yourself a strong beverage after that undertaking! No best world hikes list would be complete without this mammoth climb. Find out more   6. Tongariro Alpine Crossing, New Zealand It should come as no surprise that multiple New Zealand hikes feature on this list. It really is the most beautiful country to explore on foot – a true hiker’s dream. This one-day walk, often heralded as the best day-hike in New Zealand, takes you on an adventure across volcanic and otherwordly terrain. You’ll pass steaming vents, bubbling lava flows, emerald green lakes and even an active volcano. A good level of fitness is required to tackle the 19km route and it takes most hikers around 8 hours (and countless photographs) to complete. Challenge yourself on this New Zealand Adrenaline Rush holiday   7. Robberg Peninsula, South Africa This South Africa hiking route has a lot of beauty tucked up its rugged sleeve. With the path hugging the picturesque cliffside and leading you alongside endless views of the sparkling Atlantic (and a seal colony!), it’s truly beautiful. Only a short drive from the Garden Route’s Plettenberg Bay, it makes for the perfect active addition to any adventure along the Garden Route. There are three different hikes you can choose from (from just a brief 30-minute stroll, to a 5-hour hike, there’s something for every fitness level!) Psst… keep your eyes on the surf! Hikers often spot Great White Sharks and all manner of other marine animals from the trail. Take me there   8. Mount Fuji, Japan Mount Fuji is as elusive as it is iconic. There’s never any guarantee of actually seeing the shy mountain, but opting to make the climb guarantees you’ll experience it! Mount Fuji is open to hikers between early July and early September and there are four different trails up to choose from. It’s not a hugely challenging mountain to climb, but you’ll still need a good level of fitness to tackle it. If you’re up for a serious adventure (and reward), hike up through the night to enjoy the sunrise from the peak. It’ll be a view of Japan and a moment you won’t forget in a hurry – more than worth the hideously early wake-up call! Find out more   9. Fitz Roy Trek, Argentina The logo for the Patagonia clothing brand is actually the outline of the Fitz Roy mountain range in Patagonian Argentina – that’s how iconic this hike is! Climbing Mount Fitz Roy itself is a huge challenge and one that would take some seriously impressive mountaineering skills. However, the day-hike is much more achievable (although still very steep in parts!) Even during the grueling climbs though, the sheer beauty of the scenery that surrounds you is sure to distract you from any burning calves or blistered feet! Find out more about the Fitz Roy Trek   10. Drakensberg Mountains, South Africa The Drakensberg Mountains, (that translate to ‘Dragon’s Mountain’), are spawling and stunning every way you look. Covering an impressive 1000km, there are countless different routes that you can take to explore this magnificent area of South Africa. Whether you’re after a gentle amble, a multi-day hike or a challenging mountain climb, there’s something for you. You’ll follow tracks carved through lush green forests, you’ll teeter along cliff tops and be dwarfed by the dramatic mountains towering above you. If chasing waterfalls TLC style is your thing, you’re in luck here. The Drakensberg Mountains are home to the plummeting Tugela Falls – the second-highest waterfall in the world. Go hiking in the Drakensberg   11. Mount Toubkal, Morocco Mount Toubkal, known locally as ‘Jebel Toubkal’, is the highest peak in North Africa. Climbing this impressive peak in the Atlas Mountains will take two days to allow for acclimatisation to the reduced oxygen levels! Reaching the summit of Jebel Toubkal will see you hiking amidst stunning mountain landscapes in the beautifully warm sunshine, all punctuated with the delicious flavours of Moroccan cuisine at your rest stops. You’ll need a fairly good level of fitness, but for a mountain climb (and for the level of achievement you’ll get at the top), it’s not too taxing. Find out more about this three-day Jebel Toubkal ascent   12. Lipton’s Seat, Sri Lanka If you’re visiting the emerald tea hills of Sri Lanka, the Lipton’s Seat hike is an absolute must. Tea lovers amongst you (everyone really!) will recognise the name almost instantly. This stunning area just outside of the town of Haputale is where Sir Lipton of Lipton’s tea bought a plantation to grow his tea. He focused on affordability and it wasn’t long before his tea became a huge hit across the world. Whether you take a tuk-tuk to the top or choose to hike up yourself, aim to make it to the viewpoint for sunrise. The sight of the sun rising over the tea hills, burning off the atmospheric mist over the emerald tea leaves is magic. And walking back down past the tea-pickers in their array of multi-coloured saris makes for a truly memorable and authentic experience. Enjoy this and so much more on this Active Sri Lanka itinerary   13. Sapa, Vietnam The stunning area of Sapa in northern Vietnam is poised on the side of a mountain in the Hoàng Liên Son mountain range and overlooks the valley below. The valley floor is a carpet of green or yellow (depending on the time of year), and the views are nothing short of mesmerising. A trek with a Hmong guide is as authentic an experience you can have here. You’ll be invited into a local home and have the opportunity to taste the delicious local food and learn about what life in the rice terraces is like. Explore Sapa and Vietnam’s Northwest   14. Quadisha Valley hike, Lebanon Lebanon might not be top of your hiking wishlist, but the spectacular scenery and boundless nature of the Qadisha Valley is well worth a visit! This area is home to the first Christian monasteries of Lebanon and you can visit Hawqa monastery (which is still inhabited today) and Deir Qannoubine, the oldest monastery in Lebanon on your hike. Factor in a stop to refuel with a spot of delicious Lebanese mezze at a local restaurant too. Many have beautiful views over the sweeping valley so you can fully immerse yourself in your destination whilst you dine. The food here is just so delicious, you’ll be signing up for a cooking class after you try it! Take me there   15. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda A hike through Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest has more up its sleeve than a panoramic view at the end. A trek here gives you the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to come face to face, eye to eye, with a mountain gorilla. If that’s not worthy of a best world hikes list, we don’t know what is. Befriend the gorillas in Uganda   16. Wadi Rum, Jordan If you’re looking to channel your inner Lawrence of Arabia and be engulfed in the history and scenery of the Wadi Rum, then a guided hike with jeep support through this incredible desert is the hiking adventure for you. The hike includes plenty of rest stops under the shade of local Bedouin tents where you’ll be offered more fresh mint tea than you can drink. You’ll visit natural and famous landmarks including canyons and the Burdah Rock Bridge and see evidence of those who’ve passed this way before in rock inscriptions dating back hundreds and sometimes thousands of years. It was here that Lawrence of Arabia fashioned his unique desert fighting force and there are numerous sites associated with his exploits. But, more than anything else Wadi Rum offers the chance to enjoy the silence and majesty of one of the world’s great landscapes. A round-up of the world’s best hikes wouldn’t be complete without it. Go trekking in the Wadi Rum desert   17. Walking safari in Africa It’s rare to see a holiday bucket-list without the words ‘safari’ glaring at you from somewhere on it. (Usually near the top!) But, there’s a way to upgrade the traditional Big 5 safari experience to one that gets you even closer to the action. Few of the best world hikes compare to walking in the footsteps of lions, or viewing a troop of elephants drinking from a waterhole not too far away whilst you’re on your own two feet. You’ll feel even more humbled by the vastness of the African plains and even more in awe of the wildlife that call them home. You’ll be walking with a trained guide of course, so panic-noteth! Explore more: Kruger bush walks   18. Japan – Nakasendo Way A hike along the Nakasendo Way really is a hike to the heart of Japan. Winding through the ancient Kiso Valley, the trail is the old route that used to connect Tokyo to Kyoto back in the Edo period. Whether you have one day to spare or five, there will be a section of the Nakasendo Way perfect for you. Rest your weary limbs in the natural hot waters of a hot-spring ryokan, explore the beautifully preserved ancient post towns and hike up stunningly rural pathways. There are also companies who offer luggage forewarding too, so you don’t have to channel your inner camel enroute. Find out more   19. The Balcony Walk, Oman Jebal Shams and the Wadi Ghul, nicknamed Oman’s Grand Canyon, is the place to go for a hiking adventure in the country. Wadi Ghul canyon is 500m deep and is found to the side of Jebel Shams, the highest of the mountains in the Hajar range. The balcony walk leads you along the canyon’s edge (which can feel a little pulse-racing at times!) The hike is around 4km in length and although the route is a little rugged, it’s fairly easy to follow without getting lost! This is a treat of a hike with staggering views every moment from start to finish. There are no cafes or rest stops or anything enroute though, this is a proper back-to-nature hike. So, be sure to bring everything you need with you (and take it when you leave!) Find out more 20. Hike the Waterberg Plateau, Namibia There are plenty of hiking options in this stunning part of Namibia. Pick your route and make your way up the craggy sloping edges of the plateau. When you make it to the top, it will all be worth it when you admire the far-reaching views over the vast Kalahari Plains below. What it's like to travel now

A message on travel from our Founder, Andy  “I’ve travelled throughout my life – my parents were expats and I’ve spent my entire career in the travel industry. I haven’t kept detailed records, but pre-pandemic I doubt I went more than 200 days without getting on a plane. Cut to when I found myself at Heathrow a couple of weeks ago, I counted back and it was 780 days since I had last flown or travelled internationally. I’ll admit to being a bit nervous. Not about the travel part itself, but about how things might have changed. First of all, I find wearing a mask quite unpleasant. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not an anti-masker! I know they play an important role in combating the spread of Covid, and I’ve always followed the guidance on wearing one. However, I do find them uncomfortable, and my glasses always steam up, so I wasn’t looking forward to wearing one on the flight and in the resort on arrival. A lot of flights and destinations no longer require them though, so it’s worth checking before you leave if you’ll need one or not. I was also convinced that, despite checking and re-checking, we would somehow have missed some key element of the Covid travel requirements and end up getting denied boarding! All of this was a new experience, because I’ve never stressed about travelling before. But, the good news is that I needn’t have worried. I coped fine with wearing a mask, we didn’t mess up on the travel requirements, and we (my wife and I and our two young daughters) ended up having exactly the holiday we needed: plenty of swimming, relaxation, and sun! I’m not going to pretend the masks and travel requirement stress didn’t have some impact on the trip – but it was hugely outweighed by the positive benefits of travelling again. I hadn’t realised how much I’d missed the pleasure of being in a different country, enjoying different experiences and being lifted out of the day-to-day routines of home. And, of course, if you book your holiday with us, we can take the stress out of the whole process for you. It’s our job to understand the travel regulations for you, so all you need to worry about is what to pack! Although we can give you guidance on this as well if you need… So, the message from me is that if the additional requirements of post-pandemic travel have been putting you off booking an overseas holiday, go ahead and take the plunge because you won’t regret it – I certainly don’t! In fact, whilst I’ve historically been very last-minute in planning my own holidays, we’re already excitedly making plans for the October half-term this year and for summer next year. Travel is well and truly back, and that’s a wonderful feeling indeed.” Andy Hunt, HA Founder
