Sri Lanka
Overview
Few realise that Sri Lanka is one of Asia’s foremost wildlife destinations; it’s packed full of national parks and is even home to primary rainforest.
Due to the troubles Sri Lanka faced for so many years, many of Sri Lanka’s national parks feel very raw and untouched. New ones are opening up to tourism each year, making them incredibly exciting. Yala National Park is Sri Lanka’s most famous as it’s home to an incredibly high concentration of leopard, as well as sloth bear. Because of this it can become busy, so for keen safari goers we suggest heading to Gal Oya National Park or Wilpattu. The density of wildlife in these parks are less impressive but they offer serene and almost tourist free wildlife watching. The last time we visited Wilpattu we saw two leopards and absolutely no other jeeps. For those who are keen birders then definitely head to Sinharaja; home to the shimmering blue magpie, this area of primary rainforest is a breeding ground for exquisite endemic bird life.
