Our walking tour through Fort Cochin is a fantastic way to experience this small and historic part of Cochin, once home to traders, tea plantation owners and explorers. It’s now a delightful display or crumbing old Raj-era buildings, village greens and Portuguese houses that are best enjoyed on foot. Our tour begins by taking you past Vasco Da Gama Square, home to the remains of Fort Immanuel and St Francis Church. Here you will have time to stop for coffee and cupcakes at the beautiful Kashi Arts Café before continuing past the Dutch Cemetery, Bishop House and Santa Cruz Basilica. After this you might like to try a typical Kerala breakfast of Appams (hoppers) and vegetable stew at a local eatery. The tour then continues to The Dutch Palace in Mattancherry before ending in the historic Jewish quarter, a network of lanes lined with antique and spice shops. Paradesi Synagogue naturally sits in this area; it’s embellished with lanterns, ceramic tiled floors, and a collection of scrolls from the Old Testament. The synagogue dates back to 1567 and should not be missed.
