Guided drives in this scenic area, both into the canyon itself and in the surrounding desert expanse, are a fine way to discover the resilient wildlife that survives in such challenging conditions, and to drink in some truly exceptional scenery. There is a surprising variety of geological features, similar to the Naukluft Mountains area, with rough limestone, shiny quartzites, fine shales and dramatic fault lines going back hundreds of millions of years! On longer expeditions lunch might be taken by a permanent rock pool, which could allow for a refreshing dip.
Kudu, oryx, klipspringer and mountain zebra are often encountered, with an experienced guide on hand to know the best places to look and to explain how each species tackles such a harsh environment. One of the best drives is on the private Gondwana Canyon Park, with its breathtaking landscapes and contented wildlife. Sundowner drives are also enticing, as you head out late in the afternoon to find the most picturesque spot for a serene drink as the sun pales over this stunning, timeless landscape, with panoramic views of the canyon and the meandering Fish River.
