Visitors who have not done their research may not realise that the Temple of Philae is actually only a few decades old, if you take into account that the whole temple was dismantled, moved a few hundred metres, and reassembled following the construction of the Aswan High Dam. Prior to that, the temple had of course been in existence for some 2,400 years but was in grave danger of being lost to the ever-rising waters of the lake south of Aswan. The island is home to various buildings and monuments, the largest and most impressive of which is the Temple of Isis, with its collonaded approach and intricate columns. The Kiosk of Trajan is much smaller but possibly the island’s most recognisable landmark, its columns decorated with carved floral headstones that are almost 2,000 years old.
Part of the fun associated with a visit to Philae is the boat ride across to the island, which takes around 10-15 minutes each way and allows for some excellent photo opportunities. While Philae is bound to be visited by almost anyone who stays in Aswan, whether on a Nile cruise or staying on dry land, its popularity shouldn’t detract from its standing as undoubtedly one of the town’s must-see attractions. There is also a daily Son et lumière show here each evening, which is probably one of the better ones in Egypt.
