One of the great advantages of staying on the Cape Peninsula is the time and opportunity to explore it in more detail than is possible in a day-trip from Cape Town. Nowhere is this more true than down at Cape Point. The Cape Point Nature Reserve is now part of the Table Mountain National Park, which now covers most of the Cape Peninsula. The focus of any visit tends to be the Cape Point lighthouse, reached by a short funicular railway. The views from here are phenomenal, stretching back up the coast towards the Cape of Good Hope and south to the Antarctic. The lighthouse is testament to the threat the Peninsula poses to shipping, and as you drive or walk around the reserve, there are numerous points where its possible to see shipwrecks. The real joy of the Peninsula is the small roads and trails that disappear off into the indigenous fynbos vegetation. We encourage you to spend time exploring these, it’s always worthwhile. You might spot some of the antelope that call the reserve home, like the bontebok or enormous eland, or you might simply come upon a small bay, with a little beach and no-one else there, the perfect place for a picnic lunch.
