Rumours of a lost city in the mountains of modern-day Jordan began to intensify amongst European travellers towards the end of the 18th Century. One of those travellers, Jean Louis Burckhardt, a convert to Islam, used the pretext of a visit to Aaron's Tomb to get the local tribesmen to lead him to Petra. Aaron was the brother of Moses, and Jebel Harun is believed to be the Biblical and Koranic Mount Hor, where he was buried. The day-long hike to Aaron's Tomb starts with a walk through the city of Petra, before taking precipitous paths higher and higher into the surrounding massif. The tomb itself is a simple affair, in the style of Islamic tombs with a whitewashed dome. The views are absolutely spectacular, over the fissured mountains and under huge skies. The trek can be undertaken on foot, or with the support of camels or donkeys.
