Meaning ‘hilltop’, Gangtok sits atop a mountain ridge 1870m above sea level. It’s the capital of Sikkim that was once part of an important trade route into Tibet. The extraordinary views of Kanchenjunga, as well as the peak of Narsing, is enough to bring you here for a day or two but there’s also several religious sights to enjoy, including Rumtek Monastery. It has a laid back feel and visitors tend to enjoy soaking up the atmosphere.
