Your morning begins with an exploration of the magical Miyajima. This sacred island, situated in the Seto Inland Sea, is one of the most photographed places in Japan. The iconic 'floating' torii gate appears on countless postcards and travel magazines, but the rest of the Itsukushima Shrine, and the surrounding town that sprawls up the mountain side, are just as beautiful.

You will have plenty of time to explore and learn about the history of this important speck of land - a holy place for the Shinto religion for well over a thousand years. Enjoy a morning of shrines, temples, scenic strolls, delicious local treats, and make friends with the wandering sika deer who also call this place home.

Back on the mainland this afternoon, take a stroll through the Peace Memorial Park, ground zero for the Atomic Bomb that devastated the city on August 6th, 1945. Learn about the significance of the monuments and statues throughout the park, such as the A-Bomb Dome and the Cenotaph, before heading to the Museum itself. The displays and exhibits within are moving and can be upsetting, but give an unparalleled understanding of the events that took place here.
