It’s likely you’ll approach Hole in the Wall along a rutted, bumpy track from Coffee Bay, feeling like you’ve somehow come to the ends of the earth. If you’re lucky with your timing and sea conditions, as you get out of your vehicle, you may just hear a crashing roar vividly illustrating the Xhosa name for this geological feature: “izi Khaleni”, or “place of thunder”. It is a large offshore ridge of rock, more of a towering, narrow island, and bored right through the middle is an arch. At high tide and with significant waves, the crash of the water forcing its way through the gap echoes for miles around. Xhosa legend tells of a mighty fish that battered its way through the rock, and the whole place certainly has something of a mythological feel to it.
