The San Bushmen are an indigenous Southern African people whose territory has traditionally spanned numerous countries, mainly concentrated in the Kalahari areas of Botswana, Namibia and South Africa. Their self-sufficient lifestyles were unchanged for centuries, surviving amidst the harshest desert conditions until a gradual incorporation of farming in the mid-20th century, meaning their communities have been of endless fascination to anthropologists. Genuine bushman experiences that are not kitschy tend to be a little more difficult to find in Namibia than in Botswana, but Fiume Lodge offers one of the best.

You will head out with a translator who speaks the Bushman language fluently to learn more about their culture, history and modern daily lives. Breakfast and lunch packs are included in both half and full day excursions, and the whole activity is largely relaxed and informal. Nevertheless, you can expect to enjoy a bush walk, visit a village and learn about such cultural aspects as jewellery, how to build a fire, weapons, medicines and varying gender roles within the community.
