The flat, expansive plains and endless Makgadikgadi horizons are just as suited to dreamy horse riding expeditions as it is to quad biking. Set departures run out of Camp Kalahari, while bespoke itineraries can be arranged from Jack’s and San Camp. Overnight adventures tend to include two nights of fly camping in Xau Xai, not actually on the pans but in fascinating areas of scrubby grass and mopane woodland. The itineraries explore these habitats and head out onto the pans themselves, with the exact programme depending upon the time of year.

In the dry season, you will visit meerkat colonies, stop at water holes to view wildlife and take in some truly inspiring scenery, decorated by imposing baobabs. In the wet season, most of these experiences will still be included, but there will at times be a stronger focus on the unique zebra and wildebeest migration that traverses the area up until the end of April. From an excellent vantage point on horseback, riders gain privileged access to this magnificent spectacle as the animals are far less nervous about being approached by horses than on foot or by vehicle.
