South of Essaouira along the broad sweep of beach is a crumbling ruin, the remains of a fortress built just a bit too close to the ocean which is now swamped by sand and looks for all the world like a sandcastle about to slip beneath the waves. Sadly the legend of it inspiring Jimi Hendrix to write “Castles Made of Sand” when he visited Essaouira isn’t true (the song was written before his visit), but the Borj makes a good objective to aim for if you want a pleasant and bracing walk along the surf.
