Set in the 37,000 hectare private Kulala Wilderness Reserve and owned by one of southern Africa’s finest operators, Wilderness Safaris, it is easy to see why Kulala Desert Lodge remains such a popular choice for visiting Sossusvlei. There are 23 tented rooms (or “”kulalas””), including three family units, all built on wooden platforms with private verandas looking out to the Namib dunes. Each has steps leading up to a flat rooftop where mattresses can be placed for sleeping under the stars when conditions are favourable. There is a waterhole that attracts oryx, springbok, ostrich and other wildlife, all present on the reserve in significant numbers.

The main lodge has an extensive veranda, comfortable lounge, dining area and small pool, all overlooking the desert dunes. There is a private gate leading from the reserve to the Sossusvlei and Dead Vlei area, meaning that guests at Kulala accommodations can get to the dunes before visitors from most other lodges and camps. Activities within the reserve, including nature drives and walks along the often dry Tsauchab River, are also possible and will generally be enjoyed in the late afternoon following lunch and a siesta. The lodge is also only 20km from Sesriem, meaning that more independent travellers can stay here and discover the area at leisure.
