The Namib’s expansive sands and rolling dunes in the Sossusvlei-Sesriem area provide a perfect environment for quad biking. There has been some concern about the environmental impact of biking on the very delicate flora and fauna of the desert, but these activities are sensitively operated on set trails within private reserve areas, rather than in the national park itself. For example you might enjoy an expedition in the Kulala Reserve or on the wide open gravel plains near Sossusvlei Desert Lodge, just outside the Namibrand Reserve. This is the sort of terrain that quad bikes were made for, and they are capable of reaching spots that are inaccessible even for 4WD vehicles. The sand, noise and heat of a desert biking excursion is exciting and, at times, relatively demanding, so a dip in your lodge’s pool afterwards will provide welcome relief and relaxation.
