Kerak Castle, along with Krak Des Chevaliers in Syria, mark the apogee of Crusader military architecture. Vast castle walls following the contours of the slopes have augmented the sheer rock sides of the outcrop on which it is built. It truly must have presented a fearsome sight to the Arab armies, and indeed many of them dashed themselves against those walls before the garrison eventually succumbed to a siege, decades after much of the surrounding territory had fallen to the Arabs. As well as the amazing views and the sheer scale of the place, there are two huge vaulted halls that are particularly impressive and some remarkably well-preserved kitchens where you can still clearly see what function each part of the room served.
