Khmer food is not as well-known as neighbouring Thai or Vietnamese food, yet has a variety of tasty national dishes and there are many anecdotes which can be told be a local guide. This is a fun way to explore a truly ‘local’ market and learn about Cambodian cuisine.

You first travel by cycle from you hotel to the market, much as most restaurant owners and chefs do on a daily basis. Walk through the aisles as your guide explains the different fruits, herbs and vegetables and how they are used in Khmer cuisine. Try some seasonal, local fruits along the way.

The walking tour of the markets lasts about 2 hours – there is that much to see! Conditions can be wet and dirty at times — flip flops are the best footwear. The market we visit is one used by Phnom Penh citizens and not at all on the tourist trail.

You then head to a local restaurant for lunch – deliberately being guided to order dishes which use many of the ingredients you saw at the market. Some are ready cooked and French-style baguettes (num pang) and the tasty nom banh chok can be ordered.

A great tour for foodies and lovers of local, non-touristy experiences. A great way to learn about food, Khmer traditions and also offers the chance to take some memorable photos whilst walking through the market. The focus is on food unlike other market visits in the city which include architecture and shopping.
