Sometimes you just can’t decide if you want to spend your days out on safari in search of some of the amazing local wildilfe and losing yourself amongst the safari bush or reach for the sun lounger to clear your thoughts as you relax on a white sandy beach, surrounded by crystal clear waters. Well, with South Africa and Mauritius just a short 5-hour flight between them, why not do both. This journey can be a simple one, with a selection of luxury and characterful safari lodges a short drive from Johannesburg in the malaria-free reserves of Pilanesberg, Waterberg and Welgenvendon. Lesser visited than the Kruger, you’ll come away with a unique story of spotting the ‘Big 5’ surrounded by mountainous backgrounds and gorges with natural streams and pools. There is even the opportunity to explore beyond the wilderness and maybe take a hot air balloon ride, a horseback safari or a cultural tour of Bushman paintings and Iron Age sites.

From Johannesburg, you take the direct flight to Mauritius where you have a choice of beaches and hotels to suit all discerning tastes. The north is vibrant and alive with tourists and entertainment, the south is for those looking for a more peaceful setting with the opportunity to hike into the Black River Gorge National Park, the west is the more protected side of the island with calm waters and secluded beaches and the east is where you find many of the 5* luxury resorts.
