Peru’s northern Amazon is the place to head for river cruises. A number of excellent operators offer three, four and seven night itineraries departing from the gateway city of Iquitos and sailing through the wildlife-rich tributaries of the mighty Amazon river. This is a wonderful way to enjoy the rainforest as you can simply relax on deck and enjoy the passing jungle scenery, keeping an eye out for birds, monkeys and the occasional glimpse of pink and grey river dolphins.  Excursions are generally taken on a small group basis, departing on a motorised canoe for a guided river safari through smaller tributaries teeming with wildlife, or disembarking completely to take a fascinating trek through the jungle. The majority of cruises will also offer the opportunity to visit a local community at some stage during your cruise. Though cruises are generally the more costly way to experience the rainforest (compared to a lodge-based stay in Peru’s Southern Amazon), they are almost always a memorable experience if your budget can stretch to it.
