Curling around the eastern and northern walls of Marrakesh are the city’s palm plantations. In truth, not much of this original function remains: the plantations have been turned into villas, luxury hotels and golf courses, providing an excellent alternative to staying in the city itself. With more space to sprawl across, the hotels are spacious and with lovely gardens and grounds, yet you’re within a few minutes of the hurly-burly of the medina. For a more relaxing time it’s worth considering a stay here – indeed many people touring around the country begin their trip with a stay in the medina to soak everything up, and end with a coupe of days to relax in the Palmeraie.
