Penang – the ‘Pearl of the Orient’ – is one of the most visited destinations within Malaysia, and with very good reason. The natural beauty, cultural splendour, exceptional cuisine available and eventful history draws in countless tourists to the small island off of the northwest shores of Peninsular Malaysia. Penang gained UNESCO World Heritage status in 2008, with the pedestrian friendly centre of Georgetown the liveliest district and best spot to base yourself during your time here. Boutique hotels galore, charming Chinese temples and clan houses, as well as graffiti lined streets and hipster cafes keep the area quirky and interesting enough for stays of at least 2 to 3 nights, even a week long stay here is an absolute pleasure. The beaches around the island are perfect family spots to enjoy relaxation, and sightseeing tours can be enjoyed including visits to Penang Hill, Snake Temple, Tropical Spice Garden, as well as the many markets dotted around town. Families can also enjoy the interactive museums and adventure parks if traditional sightseeing is taking its toll.

Be sure to explore the centre of Georgetown on foot, walking the heritage trails and keeping a camera close to snap the fascinating street art as you go. The famous Blue Mansion (Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion) should also not be missed, as well Khoo Khongsi, a former Chinese Clan House for the Khoo family.
