Smack-dab in the centre of the Shiodome commercial district, within a hexagonal tower that houses the headquarters of Kyodo News, and encircled by the skyscrapers of some of Japan’s biggest companies – the Park Hotel, at first glance, seems to be aimed squarely at the business traveller.  Nothing could be further from actuality, and this artsy abode is a haven of colour and style in a sea of ‘salarymen’ and suits.

Attractive rooms look out upon the surrounding metropolis, bathing in natural light, and are arranged around a central atrium that spans the ten floors.  The lobby and ART Lounge are the perfect place to sit and appreciate the design of the building, as well as the ever-changing exhibitions that cover the walls and hallways.  In keeping with the gallery-meets-hotel concept, an entire floor of guestrooms have been decorated by notable local artists, all around specific Japanese themes and cultural icons, some of which are uniquely bold and vivid.  Standard rooms are less dramatic, but still have more personality and flair than your average hotel room – a delight, and a welcome splash of colour in the concrete neighbourhood.

Thanks to efficient elevated walkways, the Park Hotel is a walk away from the attractive Hamarikyu landscape gardens and the buzz of Tsukiji fish market (though the early-morning tuna auctions now happen elsewhere).  The city’s flawless public transportation system allows you to get to Tokyo Station, glitzy Ginza, and anywhere else on the circular Yamanote line, with ease from nearby Shimbashi station. Gleefully different and impeccably well run, the Park Hotel is a great address to explore Tokyo from.
