Owned and run by Tata Tea, the Tea Museum in Munnar’s Nallathanni Estate tells the extraordinary story of tea growing in the region. It houses curios, photographs and machineries related to the tea industry and showcases how the first tea planters in the area transformed Munnar from an uninhabited stretch of forest into a major plantation centre. Here you can learn about tea growing, the process of creating tea ready for export, as well as enjoying a tea tasting session. Apart from tea related items the museum also houses a section of colonial era furniture, typewriters and bathtubs that would have been common in tea planters’ bungalows from the late 19th century.
