Kampong Thom and Kampong Chhnang are neighbouring regions, in the great expanse of countryside and provincial towns between Cambodia’s more famous destinations.

Those choosing to take the scenic overland route between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, along much-improved sealed roads (complete with clean service stations and coffee stops) will possibly wish to break up the journey in the town of Kampong Thom.  The pre-Angkorian Sambor Prei Kuk is a worthwhile diversion during a full day’s drive, and staying overnight in the region will allow you to experience a different side of Cambodia, and a slower pace of life.

For a true rural escape, Kampong Chhnang is a perfect option – just south of the famous Tonle Sap lake that sits in the middle of Cambodia, the region is relatively sparsely populated, but is blessed with beautiful scenery and friendly people.  Nearby Oudong – the former capital – boasts temples, stupas and monks aplenty, making it a great stop-off point for those driving from Battambang to Phnom Penh on the ‘quiet’ side of the lake.
